The Temperaments were used in 1800s medicine--Humorism--to describe ailments. They have always been used to explain what went wrong.

These terms are outdated to use for our students. I suggest broader Aristotelean terms--earth, air, fire, and water. These are less literal and more universal in a multicultural school community.

Better yet, the classical 4 elements lead to thinking about Quintessance, which is more in line with Anthroposophy than Humorism. If we need updated medicine, Chinese medicine has excelled in this field where EuroAmerican culture dove into science and pharmaceutical medicine. Humorism is a nearly dead branch of EuroAmerican culture which is good to study but even better to prune in our approach to young minds.

We need to not only meet the children as they are, bit prepare them for the unknown. Exercises in curiosity, critical thinking, creative expression, nature/chemistry and practical skills are best.

We talk about temperaments all the time in Waldorf education.
But how often do they actually shape the lesson?

More often than not, they appear after the fact, used to explain what has already gone wrong.
