The role of a doula is never to take the place of your partner. In contrast, my prenatal meetings are set up to bring confidence to you, and whoever will be joining you at your birth, so that everyone on your team will feel ready when it is โ€œgo timeโ€. Nothing replaces the affirmations given by a trusted loved one while a doula is grabbing iced towels or doing hip squeezes. Everyone one has a role to play. Trust me; It takes a village, from the very beginning!! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผโœจ

๐Ÿ“ฃ Exciting news! ๐Ÿ“ฃ We have a new group of doula interns! ๐ŸŽ‰

These passionate doulas are serving as volunteers for Roots clients. If you are not a Roots client, they are available for hire. Hereโ€™s a little bit about our new doula interns!

๐ŸŒฟ Rachel Stewart is an entrepreneur, selfless warrior, and mom of two. She currently works full-time while managing entrepreneurship and motherhood. โ€œMy reason for seeking a place here in the doula universe is to be an asset to mothers and families during a time that is so precious,โ€ Rachel shared. โ€œPeace is a very important part of having a child; I believe my loving and selfless spirit will provide the necessary peace to carry out what we know to be a natural and beautiful process.โ€

๐ŸŒฟ Danae Johnson is a full-time professional doula and mom to two little ones. After seeing the impact her own doulas had on her birth experiences, Danae trained with Childbirth International. Her business name, Sanctuary Birth Doula, comes from her passion that every birth space should be a sanctuary of its own, a place of protection and peace. โ€œAs a doula, I am here to help you mentally and physically prepare for what that sanctuary looks like for you โ€” before, during, and even after birth,โ€ Danae said. โ€œI am confident that a strong support system is key to a smooth delivery and recovery, and I would be honored to be a part of your support system.โ€

๐ŸŒฟ Kyliah Thompson is a trained doula and social worker in North St. Paul. Originally from the Chicagoland area, Kyliah attended the University of Minnesota Duluth for undergrad and Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned her masterโ€™s in social work with a concentration in mental health. โ€œAdvocating, empowering, and building strong and intentional relationships with the people around me is central to my approach as both a doula and a social worker,โ€ Kyliah noted. โ€œMy main goal always is to ensure you feel safe and secure, unconditionally accepted, and capable within your journey."

As we continue celebrating World Doula Week, we want to tell you why we think itโ€™s important to have a birth doula.

In our latest blog, weโ€™re answering lots of common questions about doulas and exploring the benefits of doulas. These include:

โฐ Shorter labor: Studies have shown that people who have a birth doula have shorter labors by 40 minutes on average.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Less pain: Evidence Based Birth writes: One study revealed that doulas are a form of pain relief themselves! With continuous support from a knowledgeable and present doula, birthing parents actually feel less pain during labor.

๐Ÿ’‰ Fewer interventions: EBB also reports that birthing parents who receive continuous support from a doula are more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have pain medication, epidurals, vacuum- or forceps-assisted births, and Cesareans.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Help during the unexpected: Doulas can emotionally help birthing parents cope with unexpected circumstances in childbirth, such as an extremely long labor, medical problems that may arise with the baby, or, in rare circumstances, an emergency transfer to a hospital. Your doula will stay by your side to comfort, support, and educate you and your partner no matter what happens.

๐Ÿฅฐ Positive feelings: Every experienced doula knows that birth is one of the most emotionally transformative events in a personโ€™s life. Having a doula can help you identify and process the complex emotions that can come with birth. Studies have shown that when birthing people are supported by a doula, they decrease the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience by more than 30 percent.

This means you donโ€™t have to choose between documenting or being fully present- you can do both! Pictured is one of my clients first moments holding their baby girls hand. (Client consent obtained)
