Earwax, also known as cerumen, serves several important purposes:

1. **Protection:** Earwax acts as a protective barrier to prevent dust, debris, and foreign objects from entering the ear canal. It also helps to repel water, which can reduce the risk of infection.

2. **Lubrication:** Earwax keeps the skin of the ear canal moist, preventing it from becoming dry and itchy.

3. **Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties:** Earwax contains natural antimicrobial properties that help to prevent infection in the ear.

4. **Self-Cleaning:** The ear canal is not just a tube; it has a slight curve. As new skin cells are produced in the ear canal, old earwax is gradually pushed towards the opening of the ear, carrying with it any trapped debris. This self-cleaning mechanism helps to maintain ear health.

While earwax serves these important functions, sometimes it can become impacted or excessive, leading to discomfort or hearing problems. In such cases, it may need to be removed by a medical professional. It's generally best not to insert objects like cotton swabs into the ear canal to remove earwax, as this can push it further inside and potentially cause injury. I Can't Hear - How Come!?

There are many reasons someone may not be able to hear well. It could be due to aging, infection, and sometimes something as simple as ear wax. In fact, wax is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. Luckily, there is a solution for this.

My Ears Don’t Feel Full of Wax - So Why Bother?

Surprisingly, they don’t have to feel full of wax - they can still be full! It's a very slow process, but wax accumulates in the ear canal, and the change is so subtle...it’s difficult to notice a difference in hearing until the wax is impacted!

What is Earwax Made of?

Earwax is made of cerumen, which is an oily substance secreted by glands in the ear. It typically makes its way out of the ear by the ear opening (the only way the wax can get out), but other times, the wax accumulates over time and blocks the canal - leading to hearing loss.

Is Earwax Harmful?

Nope! The substance itself does not irritate or cause harm to the skin. It may be wise to get it checked every so often, to assess if there is accumulation. Accumulation of earwax may lead to reduced hearing and balance, which has the potential to affect safety.

My Ears Are Clogged With What!?

Many times, people don't even know there ears are clogged with wax! Wax can build up slowly, over months, years, or even decades. Occasionally, parts of hearing aids can get stuck in the ear canal as well. When ears started to get clogged, someone may notice reduced hearing, popping, or a feeling as if their ears are "full", or "blocked". Occasionally, others may explain they notice a ringing from time to time.

Are Clogged Ears Dangerous or Painful?

Short answer: no. Earwax doesn't typically pose a large threat, other than a reduction in hearing. As far as pain, earwax typically does not cause any pain. In some cases, people may have ear wax impaction and an ear infection at the same time. If that is they case, the pain will be consistent, and it's best to be seen at a primary care clinic, or local urgent care for antibiotic therapy.

How Often Should I Get My Ears Flushed?

This is a very common question, and the answer is: everyone is different. Some individuals produce a larger amount of earwax, and they need to get their ears flushed every 3-6 months. Others, may only need to get it done once per year. Those who commonly use hearing aids, q-tips, and / or air pods are more likely to have wax buildup.

Can I Remove My Ear Wax at Home?

Technically, yes. There are over the counter kits available on the internet and at local Walgreens and / or CVS stores. However, it's less safe than having a professional do it, and it's also difficult to tell if all the wax is out. Not to mention, ears are very sensitive and it's best to limit any possibility of permanent damage. The safest bet is to have a professional remove the wax safely for you, with the use of an otoscope to look inside the ear and ensure the wax is gone and the ear drum is healthy.
