Dads need leave too. This is Chris. He stopped working for the duration of his wife’s week-long hospital recovery and beyond. His twins were in the and their mom was too sick to spend time with them in their first few days of life. Chris spent his unpaid time feeding, changing, talking to, touching, and having time with his children because that’s what the care providers said they needed to stay healthy and have a chance to be discharged from the hospital in a timely manner. Whatever your family looks like, we agree that the whole family benefits when the whole family has time to bond and recover after birth or adoption. It’s important to provide space for each other to share our truth. In the world of parenting shame can fly from all directions. Parenting can be all things: hard as Sh*!, beautiful, rewarding, lonely, guilt-ridden, exhausting, empowering, joyful, painful, etc. Some days it may feel like you can check all of those boxes before lunchtime! Navigating the emotional roller coaster of parenting is difficult enough. Providing a listening ear without judgement is a real way to serve the parents around you. Sharing your own truth is another!

It takes a village. Modern Parenting can feel isolating. Sometimes you feel you have it all figured out, the next moment your kid is peeing on the floor in front of you to get your attention. “Am I ruining them permanently?” is a question that has crossed many of our minds and unfortunately those questions can begin before we even begin trying to conceive. As a village, we need to make it easier for each other. Parenting should not be an “I did it, so you should be able to figure it out” moment, but for so many working parents today that is the reality. Self care starts with understanding your own boundaries and the best way to test those boundaries is by practicing the word “no” - when it’s in your heart, say it out loud.
