Moving from the clinic setting to the schools was an adjustment to say the least. I often still feel like a square peg in a round hole as my mindset will forever be clinical and developmentally centered.

This reference is not related to any present admin or students. But the concept remains the same- you still will rarely see me using technology in my speech sessions.

Gets a Masters Degree = Blows bubbles all day. Not what I anticipated with this one but here I am. And not mad about it.

I loved this idea from in using this spinning toy in a new way to teach phonation. I incorporated this in my own session for /f/ in isolation and it was very engaging and offered an excellent visual to hold the /f/ while the ring spun.

Come along as we shape the vocalic /r/ sound into a more natural sound.

In this speech session, the student is stimulable for the vocalic /r/ sound in isolation and in words.. BUT continues to hold out the /r/ in words. Such as “spiderrrrrr” and “motorrrrrcycle.”

Have you seen this before? 🤷🏽‍♀️

I often see this once a student has an understanding of the lingual placement and tension required for the vocalic /r/.

They have the sound but overemphasis it in words. How do we generalize this sound to a more natural production?

Here’s what has worked for me:

👏🏼 Clapping out the syllables to speed up production and reduce wiggle room to “hold” the /r/ sound
👏🏼 Point cues to indicate syllable stress to reduce monotone production
👏🏼 Faded support
👏🏼 Direct verbal modeling ➡️ Gestural cues ➡️ Independent drills

What else has worked for you to generalize the vocalic /r/? 👇🏻

Anyone else? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Please don’t make me pretend to be a classroom teacher. I am only gifted to lead small groups of students for 20-30 minutes tops. Unless you want us to just do speech therapy and play games all day that is. 🤷🏽‍♀️
