A groundbreaking study suggests that a simple, ancient Indian yogic practice—blowing into a conch shell, also known as Shankh blowing—may alleviate symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
In a six-month randomized trial with 30 participants (ages 19–65, moderate OSA), half practiced shankh blowing for 15 minutes, 5 days a week—the rest did deep-breathing exercises.
Results? The shankh group saw:
• 34% less daytime sleepiness
• 4–5 fewer breathing pauses per hour during sleep
• Higher overnight blood oxygen levels
Researchers believe this technique strengthens upper airway muscles (throat, soft palate) through vibrations and airflow resistance, potentially keeping your airway more stable while you sleep.
Although promising, the study was small and not blinded. Thankfully, a larger, multi-hospital trial is on the way to validate these findings.
