Our office will be closed on Thursday, June 19th in observation of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a holiday the commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. This holiday is also known as Freedom Day and has been celebrated since 1866 with the first celebration in Texas.

There are several celebrations planned in the Twin Cities metro!

This year’s Twin Cities Juneteenth events include family festivals, movie nights, historical reenactments, art fairs, live music, community bike rides, theater performances, wellness events and more.

“This is one of the most gratifying experiences of my life!”

James “Jim” Irwin III volunteers for Walk to End Alzheimer’s in honor of his father who had vascular dementia. He credits the start of his volunteer journey to a strong connection with staff and volunteer leaders who convinced him he could have an impact.

Jim serves as the executive chair of his local Walk, helping to grow community support and boost fundraising efforts. In this role, he hears stories from fellow caregivers and loved ones who are in the thick of the disease. He gets fulfillment in connecting with them, sharing his story and providing them with Alzheimer’s Association resources.

When asked what he would tell others who are thinking about volunteering, Jim shared, “Every single effort you make will help bring us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia…you will get so much more back from your volunteering than you give.”

We are so grateful for Jim and all our Walk to End Alzheimer’s volunteers for their passion and dedication to the fight to .
