This is Herman's Story:

“When I came to Tasks I was struggling mentally. I was drinking and I was suicidal. Tasks helped me out a lot – got me on meds and got me stable. That was the most important thing for my mind and mental illness.”

After completing the initial training program and stabilizing his symptoms, Herman completed job training and became a janitor in Tasks’ supportive employment services, a position he still holds today. Throughout 2020 he and all of Tasks’ janitorial employees worked as essential workers to keep public buildings clean and safe during the pandemic. Herman credits his job with providing him a new sense of pride and self-sufficiency.

“After I’m done working, I feel good – like I did something.”

During his earlier years involved at Tasks, Herman lived at one of our Lodge residences. Lodge members, as well as janitorial employees, learn how to support and accept support from their peers to find success in living independently, managing their mental health symptoms, and maintaining employment—all part of the Fairweather Model approach. Herman’s time living at a lodge helped him to be able to manage living in his own apartment and, when he later moved to sober housing, equipped him to serve as a house manager. His commitment to helping those with shared experiences has also inspired him to become a recovery speaker at prisons.

Herman approached the pandemic by staying busy, which he sees as a great help in his mental health and recovery. He created a routine that included working, reading, working out, and focusing on his sobriety. Most recently, Herman has turned his energy and focus to fitness and wellness as an additional mental health support. This year, he dedicated himself to enter a body-building show. After much discipline and hard work, he took home three medals at the NPC Twin Cities Open, which took place this past July. He won 1st place in the Master’s category, 2nd place in Bantamweight Open category, and 4th place in the True Novice category.

Herman looks ahead to continuing to work at Tasks, maintaining his sobriety, and continuing on his spiritual journey. He’s set a new body-building goal—to compete in a more difficult, national body-building show next year. This October he is celebrating four years of sobriety – a huge feat of which he is deservedly proud. Summing up his involvement at Tasks, Herman says: “Worth it [in] more ways than one.”

This is Michael's Story:

“I was adopted as an infant into a dysfunctional home environment,” shares Michael. “As a kid I found myself getting into trouble and making poor decisions. At the age of 12, my family kicked me out of the house. I spent years in and out of juvenile detention, got caught up into drinking, drugs, joined gangs, and committed crimes. I have spent most of my life bouncing between criminal activity, addiction treatment centers, homelessness, and prison.”

At the start of 2024, Michael decided he wanted to get sober and start over. At that point, he had been unemployed for 20 years. Walking down Nicollet Avenue, he passed the Tasks office and stopped in to see what we had to offer. In June, Michael joined the Jobs Training Program and, thanks to our Benefits Cliff partnership with Hennepin County, was able to continue receiving critical benefits, uninterrupted.

Michael quickly excelled in his role, and before long he earned a permanent position as a janitor at the Minneapolis Federal Courts, where he now works 20 hours per week. At this supported employment worksite, he receives vocational support while on the job, along with the flexibility to focus on his mental and chemical health, like adjusting his hours on certain days of the week to attend AA meetings.

He has been a mentor to his peers at the jobsite and at the Tasks Resource Center, where he takes part in recreational activities such as fishing on the St. Croix and even weaving a Vikings scarf for his dog. Michael shared that he never felt like he was a part of a supportive community before coming to Tasks. Now, he has referred others and is eager to share how far he’s come.

“Like I tell everybody, everything I received from Tasks has helped me have the best year I’ve ever had. Due to this program, the grants, the help, and the support from staff. It’s awesome.”

Michael finds what he has been looking for at Tasks
Tasks Unlimited tracks a range of outcomes to measure how well our programs are meeting community needs and goals. For example, 90% of our clients report that their ability to manage mental health symptoms has improved since coming to Tasks.

While we are proud of those outcomes, the data leaves out a big part of the story: the story part. When participants share their journeys with us, their words speak, literally, to Tasks’ impact.

A little history regarding the origins of Tasks Unlimited:

Tasks Unlimited was inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. George W. Fairweather, who developed an innovative alternative to long-term hospitalization for individuals with mental illness. His approach, known as the Fairweather Lodge Model, emphasized community living, peer support, and meaningful work. Building on this model, Tasks Unlimited began working with individuals at Anoka State Hospital to plan their transition into the community and establish their own “Lodge”—a supportive home environment where members could live, work, and pursue their goals together.

Tasks Unlimited, Inc. was officially founded on June 2, 1970. Following several months of training in the Fairweather Lodge Model and guidance from Dr. Fairweather’s team, the first Lodge opened its doors on October 18, 1970, marking the beginning of a new chapter in community-based mental health support.

Connect with your elected officials!!📣

Every year, community rehabilitation programs and mental health services, like those provided at Tasks Unlimited, face legislation that jeopardizes our ability to help people with serious and persistent mental illness. In addition, the stigma of mental illness comes through in ongoing local laws and covenants barring places like a Fairweather Lodge being set-up in communities across the state.

🇺🇸Be a voice for those who live with mental illness and help break down the barriers they face everyday, at every level.

✉️Email, call, write, or visit your elected officials at any level and tell them that funding mental health services needs to be a priority even in tight budget situations.

While your at it, feel free to share the amazing difference we are making at Tasks Unlimited!
