It's Day One of vidscrip's "5 days of Carleton College Externs."
Meet Isaac!
Q: Tell us a bit about what you're up to at Carleton?
A: I'm a sophomore and member of the Class of 2019. I plan to declare Computer Science come spring term. I'm a member of DevX (our computer science interest club), the student senator representing admissions and financial aid, a member of Admissions and Financial Aid Committee, a tour guide, and the staff manager at the climbing wall.
Q: Finish this sentence: In 5 years I hope to be...
A: Creating my own college ranking website. I'm a self-diagnosed college app nerd, and my vision is to make the perfect ranking system by placing its metrics in the hands of its users. For instance, I might input "80% quality of food", "20% weather warmth", "population > 5,000", and "top 50", then receive a filtered, ranked list of the top fifty colleges I should consider given my weighted metrics.
Q: Now that you've been here a bit, what is (and is not) what you expected?
A: Hands-on almost seems like an understatement now. I thought we'd spend most of our time watching software tutorials, learning languages, and reading vidscrip's code to get a handle on what's going on. Instead, I found myself submitting production-ready code on Day 3 - super gratifying.
Q: Finish this sentence: a penguin wearing a sombrero gets off the elevator here at the office and says...
A: "Wrong floor"
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and what one person would you bring with you?
A: I'd go to Dilettante, my favorite dessert establishment, for a massive ice cream sundae. I'd bring my mom, because she'd order something, eat a fraction of it, decide it's too sweet, and give the rest to me.
