Immediate Skin to Skin at Roots Community Birth Center 🌱

When you birth at Roots, we ask you if you or your support person would like to help catch baby. We then help safely guide baby to your chest so you get that immediate skin to skin contact that is so beneficial for you and your baby. ✨

Postpartum and Newborn Care: In Clinic, at Roots 🌱

Did you know that your newborn can receive well-child care with our midwives at Roots until 6 weeks of age?

We check on your baby’s vital signs, monitor growth, jaundice levels, feeding, and help you navigate common concerns in the first weeks of life. ✨

Postpartum Care: In Clinic, at Roots 🌱

On days 1 and 3 we come to your home. 🏠

At 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks postpartum we invite you to come to the birth center. At these postpartum visits, we check on your vital signs, assess bleeding, healing, feeding, family and emotional transitions, and help process your birth and initial postpartum time.

We believe this frequency better supports postpartum families and helps improve physical and emotional wellbeing. ✨

Hospital based care providers are infrequently part of your care in labor until the very end as you’re about to birth your baby.

Our model of care looks and feels different than this standard. We are skilled in supporting your birth physically and emotionally. We believe you deserve to feel held through it all.

YES! You can have your VBAC at Roots 🌱

Often times, folks who have had previous surgical births aren’t given all of the options for consecutive births.

We are the only out-of-hospital birth center in Minnesota that offers care for VBAC!

**Our regulations require certain criteria for birth center VBACs so please reach out with specific questions! ✨

What happens after my birth at Roots? 🌱

Birth and Postpartum Care looks different, out of hospital. ✨

At Roots, if the birthing person and baby are healthy and recovering well, they go back to the comfort of their own home as early as 4 hours postpartum.

A midwife will come to your home for a postpartum visit on day 1, 3, and then we will see you back in the office at 1, 2, 4 and 6 weeks postpartum.

Standard hospital-based postpartum care is generally one visit at 6 weeks. At Roots, we believe birthing families deserve better - so, we do better. 🤲

Who will be at my birth? ✨

From Roots staff, there will be at minimum, one midwife and one birth assistant.

From your own family/support system: that is up to you! Some families want to keep additional people to a minimum, while others feel safer with a village of doula/friends/family.

You get to choose what support looks like for you. 🫂

Shared Decision Making at Your Prenatal Visit ✨

At each prenatal visit, we review your history, check in on your health and baby’s health and offer various tests and checks throughout your pregnancy. At Roots, you will always have shared decision making during your prenatal care, birth and beyond. No test or check will ever be done without first taking the time to explain what it is and why that information would be helpful to your care.

Little Helpers at Prenatal Visits ✨

We love including your littles into your prenatal visits. Giving baby kisses, touching baby, feeling for kicks, helping the midwife with measurements- it’s a great way to help with bonding and prepare them for the big transition of becoming an older sibling.
