Compassionate Ocean Zen Center

Compassionate Ocean Zen Center Compassionate Ocean Zen Center is dedicated to the central practice of awakening.

The activities of the Center cultivate awareness of the essential beauty and dignity of life coming from full engagement with life-as-it-is. Compassionate Ocean Zen Center is named after Jikai Dainin Katagiri Roshi, the root teacher of Joen Snyder O'Neal and Michael O'Neal. Jikai, Compassionate Ocean, refers to reality itself, which always holds us and bathes us with compassion. Even though we may

not be aware of it, even though we may be experiencing a lot of suffering, still we are held in the great ocean of Buddha's compassion. The Center offers programs in Zen practice and study as well as programs in mindfulness and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

Touch the Earth Buddhist Walk for Climate Justice!

📌Starting at 2:00 PM this Sunday, April 26
at Washburn Fair Oaks Park in Minneapolis.

Part of Isaiah Clergy Lighthouse Project.

2:00 PM - Gathering

2:30 PM - Ceremony & 45-minute mindful walk

3:30 PM - Closing with sharing/Dedication of merit

We will begin with singing followed by a Thich Nhat Hanh-inspired Touching the Earth ceremony and then a silent walk through the park. We will dedicate the merit at its completion.

The walk is open to all, and the park is wheelchair accessible.

From the organizers:

"We walk as a pan-Buddhist community:
in Spring, the season of rebirth, and Earth Day;
because we know our wellbeing is tied to all others, part of the symbiotic web of life and the interconnected true nature of reality;

because we experience change as not only possible, but ever-present, and acknowledge our choices and actions have consequences;

in the spirit of Ahimsa - causing no harm through intention, thought, word, or action;

because we recognize that climate change intersects with racial, social, and economic injustices, we seek to empower those most effected to lead decision-making and develop fair distribution of resources.

We walk to speak for the political, social, and legislative responses, affirmations, and incentives to make our world as sustainable as possible."

March Sesshin

7 pm Friday, March 27 – Noon Sunday, March 29

The March sesshin at Compassionate Ocean--a time of extended, grounded practice--will include two special elements.

On Friday evening at 7:30 pm, Genpo will give a talk on the 1963 Birmingham events that were a critical phase in the Civil Rights Movement, and have important resonance for our times. This talk can be attended on Zoom by anyone who isn't participating in person at the sesshin.

On Saturday, the sesshin schedule will accommodate anyone who would like to participate in one of the "No Kings" demonstrations taking place locally and around the nation. The marches will take place in the early afternoon. "A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action."

In addition to these activities, the sesshin will include sitting and walking meditation, an opportunity to meet with a teacher, a Dharma talk on Sunday, and vegetarian meals. Participants typically go home overnight.

Fee: by donation
