Dear Friends,
Please consider making a contribution to this legacy African American organization that provides culturally specific services to African Americans and their families struggling with chemical health, mental health and family preservation issues. African American Family Services (AAFS) is facing a short term funding crisis and now is an extremely important time for them to be focusing full attention on their mission, as they are in the process of modifying and expanding their chemical health services.

Please add this number to your cell phone and help save somebody's life: (612) 879-7624. This is St. Stephen's Street Outreach Team. It will be dangerously cold in Hennepin County the next couple of days, so please call if you see someone outside with no place to stay. If you give an exact location and description of the person, the team can check on them. Leave a msg if you get v-mail. You may also give the person this phone number to call us for help or with questions about housing. You can use this number at any time of the year; we are publicizing it more widely now due to the cold and the number of people staying outside this winter. Thank you for keeping our poorest neighbors in your care, friends.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today we focus on Kuumba, or creativity. At AAFS we encourage our staff and clients to constantly make progress in order to reach a state of greater well-being within one's life. Ultimately with an enhanced state of beingness, we will leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than when we inherited it. In 2013 we will encourage both clients and staff to give back to their communities in their own creative ways.

Collectively we get to engage in personal and social practices directed toward constantly restoring, repairing and transforming our world.

In the spirit of Kuumba, please consider a gift to African American Family Services this holiday season. Gifts are accepted online at www.aafs.net. Select "Donate!" at the bottom of the page.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today we focus on Nia, or purpose. At AAFS we recognize that we each have a unique contribution; therefore, we individualize client case/treatment plans and staff performance plans based on input from the individuals themselves. Our program curricula and staff training focus on identifying and enhancing individual strengths and utilizing strengths to overcome challenges.

At AAFS we also recognize Nia in the existence of the African American community and we are motivated by the overall wellness and growth of our community as a whole.

Collectively our purpose is to focus on bringing good into this world through our actions and interactions in order to maintain the beauty of our community.

In the spirit of Nia, please consider a gift to African American Family Services this holiday season. Gifts are accepted online at www.aafs.net. Select "Donate!" at the bottom of the page.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today we focus on Ujamaa, or cooperative economics. Participation in cooperative economics first starts with an individual's ability to constructively contribute to the economy.
At AAFS we encourage our staff and clients to earn a living wage, apply financial literacy skills, and maintain financial health and security by responsibly managing money. As an organization we model Ujamaa by supporting small and minority owned businesses, whenever appropriate. We also complete an independent audit on an annual basis to ensure that we are responsibly handling our funds.

As a community we get to build and maintain our stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them.

In the spirit of Ujamaa, please consider a gift to African American Family Services this holiday season. Gifts are accepted online at www.aafs.net. Select "Donate!" at the bottom of the page.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today we focus on Ujima, or collective work and responsibility. AAFS was established in 1975 as a platform where we could come together to solve the problem of substance abuse in the African American community. The organization later expanded to include supports for related and resulting issues of substance abuse and dependence. At AAFS we operate in the philosophy that the state of our community is all of our responsibility, beginning with our own lives and our own healing. Our staff training and our program curricula reaffirm our relationship and responsibility to each other and our future generations.

Collectively we get to build and maintain our community, making our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and solving them together.

In the spirit of Ujima, please consider a gift to African American Family Services this holiday season. Gifts are accepted online at www.aafs.net. Select "Donate!" at the bottom of the page.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today we focus on Kujichagulia, or self-determination. At AAFS we recognize that every person is deserving of dignity and respect. However, every individual does not always recognize this for themselves, mainly because it was never taught to them. Therefore, our curriculum is based on self-identification, realization and acceptance. We encourage all staff and clients to embrace who they are, as they define it for themselves.

As a community we get to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves. We get to dictate who we are and what we stand for!

In the spirit of Kijuchagulia, please consider a gift to African American Family Services this holiday season. Gifts are accepted online at www.aafs.net. Select "Donate!" at the bottom of the page.
