Through M Health Fairview’s free colonoscopy program, more than 500 Minnesotans have received life-saving screenings—removing barriers, expanding access, and finding cancer early when it matters most.

“I waited for a long time because I felt worried about my health, and when I got this opportunity [to receive a free colon cancer screening] it was something marvelous for me,” one participant said. “Even better when it was done, and I got results that said everything was ok. All of my fear and worry went away.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Screening can prevent cancer before it starts.

500 screenings is just the beginning. Learn more in the comments.

Now on display at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – West Bank, The Women of Wounded Knee travelling exhibit shares the voices and lived experiences of the women from the 1973 occupation. Through archival materials and oral histories, the exhibit gives space for these stories to be heard and live on.

Supporting the health and wellbeing of our indigenous communities includes uplifting this part of our history. We’re proud to partner with the Warrior Women Project who joined together with our Indigenous Healing Circle ERG to bring this to life.

Most colorectal cancers begin as polyps, which can be removed during a colonoscopy screening before they turn cancerous. So why aren’t more people getting screened?

Dr. Ajay Prakash and Dr. Shahnaz Sultan with M Health Fairview and the University of Minnesota Medical School address this question and more with Angela Davis MPR. Together, they talk about symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored, common misconceptions about family history, and what treatment looks like today.

The ultimate assist. 🏒

When Mary Kay Shannon, 70, needed a kidney transplant, a former work colleague stepped up in an extraordinary way – donating their kidney. Though they weren’t a perfect match, the care teams at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center connected them to the National Kidney Registry’s paired kidney exchange program, giving this lifelong Minnesota Men's Hockey superfan a second chance at life.

They both are recovering well. And thanks to a little teamwork from her care team, Mary Kay and her coworker were back at the rink to cheer on the Gopher hockey team once again!

Drums. Dancers. Community.

On Sunday, we gathered for the Healing in Four Directions Pow Wow, honoring the life and legacy of John “Azhide” Bobolink, a beloved advocate for Indigenous youth and longtime partner through the Saint Paul Indian Education Program.

Through traditional dance, drum groups, storytelling and a shared meal, the community celebrated culture, connection and Bobolink’s lasting impact in St. Paul.

Hosting the pow wow is part of our health system’s ongoing commitment to strengthen trust and relationships with Indigenous communities across Minnesota.

“As a health system, caring for people begins with trust,” said Heather Fahey, pharmacist and member of our health system's Indigenous Healing Circle Employee Resource Group. “Gathering in community like this is one way we continue that work together.”

Months after saying goodbye to their husband and father, Michael Schultz’s family returned to the ICU at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital for a reunion with the nurse who helped guide them through his final hours.

ICU nurse Ariah Garland created space for peace — honoring Mike’s wishes, comforting his family, and helping them say goodbye with dignity.

Mike lived what his wife describes as “a full life, a good life, a happy life.” Because he had shared his wishes ahead of time, his family didn’t have to guess what he would want.

Instead, they were able to focus on what mattered most: being together.

A first for the Upper Midwest. A new future for pediatric heart care.

Lennox Staricha is the first infant in the region to receive a partial heart transplant. Our pediatric heart and transplant teams at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital performed the highly-specialized procedure using transplanted heart valves that will grow with him.

The family’s gratitude goes out to the care teams --- and the donor family who made the transplant possible. “The greatest day didn’t come without pain for another family,” said Roxann, Lennox’s mom. “We are so thankful for them. We appreciate them saving our baby.”
