‼️STUDENT SPOTLIGHT ALERT‼️

StepUP student spotlight is where we feature one of our outstanding scholars and have them answer questions:

1. What’s your name, age, and sober date?

My name is BJ. I’m 47 and a half, non traditional student. My sober date is
10/04/222

2. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

If I had one superpower, it would be to zap angry people with love. Angry people act on emotion and I would like to show them kindness and compassion. Why would I want somebody I don’t know to be angry? It’s not conducive to an environment where we have a sense of community, nor is it conducive to healthy living. If I could show someone love, maybe that person would go on to spread love to the people around them.

3. Tell a story about a learning experience you had while you’ve been in
StepUP

I didn’t grow up in a very welcoming or open community. Coming to StepUP as a
nontraditional student, I thought I wouldn’t fit in, but I was accepted with open arms and welcomed in the community without hesitation. Seeing so many people from different backgrounds and with different identities being part of the same community coming together and helping each other out, no questions asked.

4. What are your plans after you graduate?

My plans are to work with addicts and alcoholics and see them succeed in recovery the way I have. I want to help them see for themselves that they have value. I’m going to have my MSW and my LADC and work at a treatment center as a counselor.

5. Favorite StepUP memory?

Moving in here! I was super excited to be going to college at my age. I’ve loved
seeing people around me succeed in both school and their long term sobriety
