This Testimonial Tuesday, Connie Thompson and her husband, Jay, reflected on their experience with Sholom’s transitional care program:

“I don’t know what criteria you use to employ people, but everyone is superb,” Connie shared. “They’re just so willing to help… everyone is patient-focused, and makes you feel like you’re the most important person there is.”

From compassionate care to feeling truly at home, Connie summed it up best: “It’s very homey, and you make it that way.”

Jay echoed that confidence from a loved one’s perspective, noting Sholom’s “excellent reputation,” “easy access and communication,” and a process that “flows very smoothly.” After two stays, he added, “we've had two experiences and both of them have been excellent.”

We’re grateful to Connie and Jay for trusting Sholom during important moments, and for reminding us how much our team’s care truly matters. 💞

Last week, Sholom residents and guests from the broader community gathered at Knollwood Place Apartments for a meaningful celebration of history and philanthropy. The Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest presented "The Big Chill," a documentary exploring the life and legacy of visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist Joe Numero, the donor whose generosity made Joe & Blanche Numero Sholom Home West possible. In addition to his profound impact on Sholom, Numero played a pivotal role in advancing refrigerated transportation and shaping modern industry.

The screening was made even more impactful by remarks from Joel Mandel, Executive Director of the Sholom Foundation, and Anne Steinfeldt, who helped illuminate the lasting influence of the Numero–Steinfeldt family on our campus and throughout the wider community. We were also grateful for a thoughtful Q&A led by Robin Doroshow, Executive Director of the JHSUM, and Dale Bluestein, the film’s director.

Thank you to the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest for bringing this important history to life, and to everyone who joined us to learn and celebrate together.

🌱 Tu B’Shevat Sameach! 🌱

Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish New Year for Trees, began yesterday evening and is observed today, Monday, February 2. It marks the moment when trees in Israel awaken from winter rest and begin to bloom—quietly reminding us that growth is always possible, even after a long season of stillness.

Traditionally, Tu B’Shevat invites us to honor the earth by planting trees, enjoying fruits of the land—especially the seven species named in the Torah—and reflecting on our shared responsibility to care for creation.

At Sholom, this day reflects our deep connection to renewal, sustainability, and nurturing life at every stage. May this season inspire us to plant seeds of kindness, stewardship, and hope—for today and for generations to come. 🌿

Mission Monday 💛

At Sholom, senior living is about so much more than receiving great care.
It’s about the friendships that form over morning coffee and shared laughter.
It’s about stopping by our on-site beauty shop—no car keys, no rides to arrange, just feeling like you.
It’s about restaurant-style meals where you break bread together, swap stories, and turn neighbors into friends.

Most of all, it’s about truly living—enjoying your golden years with connection, comfort, and meaning.
Because no one should feel alone at home when they could be surrounded by community, purpose, and joy.

That’s our mission. And we’re honored to live it every day.

Yesterday, the therapy team from Sholom’s Ackerberg Family West Campus — Michelle Harris, Campus Director of Rehabilitation, and Eric Stavenger, Physical Therapist — joined Bet Shalom Congregation for their senior lunch to present “Therapy Strategies for a Safer Winter.” The session shared proactive tips for preventing falls during the winter months, along with simple indoor exercises to support strength, balance, and overall safety.

At Sholom, we believe in offering free, accessible community education on the topics that matter most to older adults. We’re grateful to partner with Bet Shalom to bring this important information to their seniors, and we look forward to many more meaningful community collaborations in the future.

We’re so grateful for her warmth, wisdom, and wonderful presence in our community.

Sholom Celebrates our February Employee of the Month at our Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus, Miski!

Join us in congratulating Miski Haji, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), on this well-deserved recognition—made possible by nominations from peers who see the care, dedication, and heart she brings to Sholom every day.

Miski is originally from Rochester, Minnesota, and was the first in her family to be born in the United States after her family immigrated in 1995. She comes from a close-knit family who taught her the importance of leading with kindness and consideration—values she carries with her into her work and daily life. Outside of Sholom, Miski enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and learning new things.

At Sholom, Miski says what she values most is the family atmosphere that has been built among staff and residents. She shared that she’s inspired by how team members celebrate one another and the milestones residents reach each day—and that encouragement motivates her to always go the extra mile in the care she provides.

Nursing has always been a career Miski envisioned for herself, and she has proudly served in this role for the past five years. She continues to advance in the nursing field and plans to keep growing in her career, grateful for the many mentors and supporters who have helped her along the way.

Miski, thank you for your compassion, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. At Sholom, we are grateful for the many ways employees like you bring care, connection, and community to life every day. We appreciate you going above and beyond!

Volunteer Profile: Malkie & Tootsie

Many Sholom residents already know and love Malkie. Alongside her beloved therapy dog, Dolly, she became a familiar and comforting presence in our community. When Dolly passed away in September 2025, the loss was deeply felt. As Malkie shared, “It broke me a little bit. But, I knew I wanted to continue this work.”

With that in mind, Malkie intentionally looked to adopt a new dog with the right temperament to continue volunteering at Sholom in a skilled nursing setting. She adopted Tootsie in October and introduced her to Sholom soon after. At first, Tootsie was shy and fearful of wheelchairs and the busy environment. Just three months later, Malkie reports, “[Tootsie] drags me inside the building.”

Malkie’s connection to Sholom has also expanded beyond volunteering. After leaving her career as a teacher, she is now pursuing a career in social work. Because of the therapeutic nature of her work with Tootsie and Sholom residents, Malkie is able to complete her social work practicum at Sholom, continuing to learn and serve in a place that already feels like home.

Together, Malkie and Tootsie bring more than comfort and soft pets to Sholom residents. They offer a powerful sense of remembrance, helping residents reconnect with the pets they have loved throughout their lives. As Malkie puts it, “People love talking about their pets, the dogs, their cats, whatever it was. This gives them that remembrance, that affection that they had, and they're tapping back into that love. For people who are animal lovers, they're connecting back with that unconditional love that they have and it makes it real for them. It's a shot of endorphins.”

On behalf of everyone at Sholom, thank you, Malkie and Tootsie, for the joy, gentleness, and moments of remembrance you bring with every visit. Through the legacy of Dolly and the growing work of Tootsie, your presence continues to mean so much to our community. 🐾❤️
