Your child just started ABA therapy. You're hopeful, nervous, maybe a little overwhelmed — and wondering if you'll see changes right away.
Here's what we tell every new family at Horizon Bridge: the first month isn't about breakthroughs. It's about building trust.
Your child is meeting new people. Learning a new routine. Figuring out that this space is safe. That matters more than any data point.
Here's what the first month typically looks like:
Week 1-2: Your child's team is observing, learning what motivates them, and building rapport. Some kids warm up fast. Others need more time. Both are normal.
Week 3-4: You'll start to see your therapist use specific strategies tailored to your child. They might practice requesting items, following simple directions, or tolerating new activities — all through play.
The thing parents don't always expect? ABA should look like fun. If your child is laughing and engaged, that's not a sign it isn't working — that IS it working.
If you're in that first month right now, give yourself and your child grace. The foundation matters most.
