As an airway surgeon, this is my rule:
If you can’t squeeze it… don’t serve it whole to your child.
Choking hazards aren’t just about size—
they’re about shape, texture, and how food behaves in the airway.
Round, smooth, hard foods like grapes, hot dogs, and cherry tomatoes
can completely block a child’s airway.
Even in older kids.
Especially during snack time—
when they’re laughing, talking, and not fully focused on chewing.
Cut foods lengthwise.
Modify hard textures.
And always think before you serve.
One small change can save a life.
