Keep your celebration healthy and safe. Supervision is essential to preventing injuries with young children. Hide eggs in low, easy‑to‑reach places since falls remain one of the leading causes of injury in kids. Avoid placing eggs near any bodies of water, as drowning is silent and can happen very quickly.
Let’s keep the day fun and safe for everyone.

Spring has arrived, and with it, our clinics are receiving their shipment of helmets for patients. Through philanthropic efforts, the Trauma Prevention Program provides helmets to those in need annually. A helmet, a simple yet powerful injury prevention device, can significantly reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury. Just by wearing a helmet, you can lower your risk by up to 87%!

The Minneapolis Forestry and Electrical Workers Union 292 recently received comprehensive training in the Stop the Bleed. This training not only had practical applications in their daily work but also emphasized the significance of acquiring these skills during potential accidents in their personal lives. It was a great opportunity for both groups of trainees to enhance their safety and preparedness.

We recently had some excellent discussions with the seniors at Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha about driving as you age. They took the safe driving pledge and learned how to maintain their independence and safety while behind the wheel.

Thinking about using an e-bike, e-scooter, or other device to get around this spring for yourself or your family? Make sure you are old enough to ride, have the correct helmet for higher speeds, and have enough control of the device before riding in public spaces. Also check your local municipality laws, as each community has different rules about what can be ridden and where.

Army veteran Matthew, doesn’t remember much after a motorcycle crash on July 10, 2023, but his friend Donovan, an EMT, stayed by his side until paramedics rushed him to HCMC. With rapidly swelling brain injuries, Matthew needed an emergency decompressive craniectomy. His wife, Wanda, raced from Winthrop to Minneapolis to be with him.

Matthew spent nearly three weeks in the ICU before continuing rehab at the VA. During his stay, Wanda learned he was eligible for the HOBIT study, a national trial exploring how hyperbaric oxygen therapy can support healing after severe brain injury. Matthew received seven hyperbaric “dives” as part of the study.

Though he still experiences some memory challenges, Matthew is back to welding and grateful for how far he’s come. “I know where I could be, and I know where I am,” he says.

A high school wrestler, Brenden never expected a routine practice to change his life. After hitting his head on a door, what seemed minor quickly spiraled, within days he couldn’t stand, see clearly, or walk. A 102° fever sent him from Glacial Ridge to Fargo, where he was ultimately diagnosed with a moderate–severe brain injury and sent home in a wheelchair.

He soon began intensive care at the Hennepin Healthcare Traumatic Brain Injury Outpatient Program, starting a yearlong journey with nearly 150 appointments. His team worked together to help him relearn nearly everything: walking, reading comprehension, vision, coordination, and daily tasks.

Physical Therapist Carrie DeNeil helped him rebuild mobility, even practicing cattle showing to support his 4‑H work. Speech-Language Pathologist Allison Carolan helped him navigate alexia and rebuild cognitive skills. Occupational Therapist Elise Schultz retrained his vision and hand‑eye coordination, even incorporating boxing exercises. A neuro‑optometrist created special lenses to help correct visual pathway issues.

By March, Brenden was out of his wheelchair. By June, he was walking with a stick. And by September, he walked into the next school year on his own.

Today, the Lowry, MN teen is back to caring for his cattle, including “Legacy,” a heifer he won through the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association. Brenden's comeback that took courage, grit, and a whole lot of heart.

In 2021, orthopedic physical therapist (and former Olympian!) Kris was struck on the head by a falling object, what seemed like a minor injury quickly became a long, winding journey through concussion and brain injury recovery.

At first, she tried to push through: one stitch, a day of rest, back to work. But her symptoms, fatigue, confusion, visual challenges, and what she calls feeling “wonky”, only intensified.

Eventually, she turned to the Hennepin Healthcare Traumatic Brain Injury Program, where a coordinated team of physical medicine, speech therapy, psychology, neuro‑optometry, and OT helped her rebuild her life with compassion and expertise.

Kris learned the hard way that brain injuries require a totally different kind of healing: careful pacing, energy management (“energy is king”), and a deep respect for the brain’s limits. She found new strategies, new structure, and even new metaphors, like “poking the bear,” “wonky waters,” and tending to her “cognitive pyramid.”

Today, Kris continues discovering what life after brain injury looks like, more patience, more tools, and more understanding for the 100,000+ Minnesotans living with TBI.

Her story aims to build that understanding for others, too.
