We are wrapping up AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Awareness Month! Our team of SLP’s shared some great knowledge, tools, and resources through out the month to celebrate. Check all our previous posts out 💬

Our Speech- Language Pathologist, Kaitlyn, found some fun coloring sheets for clients to color and display! These coloring sheets can be found on Teachers Pay Teachers ().

A lot of our clients also used these coloring sheets in their OT sessions to work on skills like:

🧡 Grasp development
🧡 Fine motor and visual motor skills
🧡 Sustained attention/ engagement

Our Speech- Language Pathologist, Emily, found a fun activity to help clients advocate for themselves and inform others about their AAC! Advocating and informing is important because it ensures their access to communication, which is essential for autonomy and self expression.

It’s October and that means it is also AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Awareness Month! Our team of SLP’s are going to share knowledge, tools, and resources through out the month to celebrate.

Did you know that some AAC users are also gestalt language processors?

Gestalt language processors learn and use language in whole chunks or phases (this is called “gestalts”) rather than single words. These gestalts often carry emotional meaning and are later broken down and recombined as language develops. Modeling meaningful, functional phrases on an SGD or communication board can help these communicators expand their repertoire, connect socially, and express their feelings, preferences, and ideas.

Our Speech- Language Pathologist, Janna, created a speech device page/ communication board with fall themed gestalt examples that you can try at home, in the community, or at school/ therapy. These fun, natural gestalts give AAC users opportunities to:

- Comment on what they see and feel 🍁
- Engage in social interactions 🎃
- Talk about favorite activities, places, and traditions 🧡

It’s October and that means it is also AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Awareness Month! Our team of SLP’s are going to share knowledge, tools, and resources through out the month to celebrate.

Our Speech- Language Pathologist, Cassidy, made some easy to use low tech bracelets. Kids can point to the symbols and use it to communicate while Trick or Treating. It’s an easy way to make communication fun and accessible during this community activity. Even if a kid uses vocal speech, these bracelets can still be a good visual support to help when/ if they struggle to find words.

Our Speech- Language Pathologist, Laney, is practicing with one of her clients to build 2+ word phrases using his SGD (Speech Generating Device). A SGD is a high tech AAC tool to support expressive language.

This client loves videos about Halloween and Trick or Treating, so what a fun and meaningful way to practice growing his skill set!
