This year I would like to start highlighting fellow small businesses and people who I have relationships with who can help provide services that contribute to overall wellbeing.

Our first highlight is Ryan McDowell, personal trainer at The Retreat Strength Gym in Golden Valley. I first met Ryan 15 years ago when he led me through my first CrossFit workout. I was three months post birth of my son and was impressed with his ability to meet me where I was in regard to my fitness and his enthusiasm as a trainer.

Over the years both of us have encountered our own challenges with injuries and barriers to performing the way that we may have in the past. I have had the privilege of caring for him, and he has been a constant resource for me as I have navigated the world of fitness. Last year when I was suffering from a significant herniation in my low back and frustrated with my inability to run, it was Ryan who introduced me to rucking, which has become a game changer since in terms of alternative ways of maintaining my fitness.

Ryan is meticulous about making sure that people are moving with appropriate form and function, which is why I trust him so much as a trainer and as someone I feel confident referring to my patients. Whether you are someone new to fitness, are intimidated and don’t know where to start, or a lifelong athlete looking to continue to maximize performance, Ryan is your guy.
