"Congratulations to Shelby Gersmehl, registered nurse at Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua! Shelby recently received a DAISY Award. A patient's family nominated her, writing:
“In September of 2023 we received a life changing diagnosis for our son. This was just the start of our journey. After the diagnosis of a rare genetic condition called “Hunter Syndrome,” we embarked on what we believe to be the best treatment option available, a clinical trial of the enzyme he lacks that can cross the barrier in the brain.
My son and I moved states away for six months, where he received weekly treatments. After the six months, we were able to move home, but he still needed weekly treatments. He will need them weekly for life. With the clinical trial still under way, there were ten sites in the United States approved to administer the drug. We worked with our primary care provider back home to start the process to hopefully be able to do them 'closer to home,' but there was a lot that needed to be done for this to happen. One of which was having a nurse who had the training to access our son’s port.
In the rural area where we live, pediatric specialty care is not readily available. To continue our treatments after we moved home while waiting for a local site approval, we drove six hours one way to Chicago weekly. After sixteen weeks of travel, our local site was approved, and a nurse was ready for us!
Shelby has been by our side every week, caring for our boy and quickly became a big part of our journey. Our son knows her and trusts her, and although he may not have the words to say it himself, I know she holds a special place in his heart and ours. Diagnosis is hard, treatments are hard but having nurses like Shelby willing to go above and beyond to help bring care closer to home is something she didn’t have to do, but wanted to . . . to help a family that she did not even know. Being a nurse, I am sure is not a 'walk in the park!' You see patients at their worst and hope to help get them to their best, to be there for them. Shelby has done just that! She has seen our son on hard days and good days. We are now starting the journey to do our weekly treatments at home. Although for now, we may not see her weekly anymore, she will ALWAYS be a part of our story and someone I will ALWAYS appreciate for going the extra mile!”
