North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI)

North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI) Welcome to the North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (ND EHDI) program page! Our goal is to focus on all aspects of hearing health.

The ND EHDI program has been in operation since 2000. At that time, there was an increased emphasis placed on universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). As programs evolved from UNHS into EHDI, an additional emphasis was placed on follow-up efforts thus requiring support for both birth screening and subsequent follow-up activities. This additional focus to reduce loss to documentation/loss to follow-up (LTD/LTF) has brought about the need to enlist additional program partners including audiologists, child health care providers, and early childhood programs while maintaining a strong birth screening program. Following an infant from birth through diagnosis and into early intervention requires ongoing diligence and a system bridging all medical and educational communities.

The Annual EHDI (Early Hearing Detection & Intervention) Conference has come to an end! It was a great time of learning and connecting with people from across the country and beyond, all working toward the same goals.

North Dakota was well represented! We shared presentations, made great connections, and learned so much. We’re excited to bring this knowledge back home and continue supporting the families we serve.

The 6-month-old still has a long way to go before she masters sign language, but she's trying to communicate.

Please share with your students and their families or anyone else that may be interested.
The annual Summer Camp sponsored by the North Dakota School for the Deaf/Resource Center will be held June 15 to 19th.

Every day, developmental disability program managers guide families through some of the most overwhelming chapters of their lives. For Sara Krebs, that work is deeply personal. From living rooms to long drives across the prairie, she brings lived experience, compassion and unwavering presence to families navigating Early Intervention. Her story reflects the quiet, powerful impact of those who walk beside families when they need it most. hhs.nd.gov/news/voices-impact/voices-impact-inside-lives-north-dakotas-developmental-disabilities-program-managers

The program will run from July 6 – July 31, Mondays through Fridays, 8:30-11:30 in Sioux Falls at John Harris Elementary. Your child does not have to attend the whole month – sign up for whatever works for their summer schedules.

This program is an opportunity for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing ages 2 through 5th grade to see and hang out with others who are just like them. Classrooms are led by Teachers of the Deaf with support from support staff with Deaf and Hard of Hearing experience.

Research shows that programs like this are important because they give students the chance to meet peers who communicate like them, helping them feel a sense of belonging and pride in who they are. Seeing other children who are D/HH and adults helps them build a strong self-identity and understand that they are not alone.

If your child is older, we welcome teens to volunteer to be that role model for the students. Reach out if your teen would be interested in volunteering for a day.

Reach out with any questions! Looking forward to another great summer!
