North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI)

North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (ND EHDI) Welcome to the North Dakota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (ND EHDI) program page! Our goal is to focus on all aspects of hearing health.

The ND EHDI program has been in operation since 2000. At that time, there was an increased emphasis placed on universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS). As programs evolved from UNHS into EHDI, an additional emphasis was placed on follow-up efforts thus requiring support for both birth screening and subsequent follow-up activities. This additional focus to reduce loss to documentation/loss to follow-up (LTD/LTF) has brought about the need to enlist additional program partners including audiologists, child health care providers, and early childhood programs while maintaining a strong birth screening program. Following an infant from birth through diagnosis and into early intervention requires ongoing diligence and a system bridging all medical and educational communities.

Stella is our Faces of CMV today. Her mom, Lindsay shared about their CMV story.

They told her not to Google.
They wanted to sit down and explain it first.

Because sometimes… the words you’re about to hear change everything.

This mom had never heard of congenital CMV until the OR during her C-section. Within days, her newborn was fighting for her life—liver failure, uncertainty, and unimaginable fear.

But then… a chance.
A “Hail Mary” antiviral.
And a little girl who refused to give up.

Today, she is 10 years old. 💛

CMV can change a family’s story in an instant—but it doesn’t define the ending.

Early awareness matters.
Early intervention matters.
And these children? They are fighters.

Fostering Joy Forum Presents - Rooted in Joy: Identity, Access, and Belonging

Date: Tuesday, April 21st, 2026
Time: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm MT

https://handsandvoices.org/registrations/fostering-joy-reg.html

What does joy look like in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) experience? Too often, conversations focus on challenges, barriers, or systems. This forum shifts the lens. Together, we will explore the power of joy as told through lived experience—by individuals who are D/HH. Hosted by Hands & Voices, this conversation celebrates identity, connection, growth, and belonging. Through personal stories and shared reflections, this session will highlight everyday moments that make the D/HH journey meaningful and vibrant. Whether you are a chapter leader, family member, professional, or community partner, you are invited to listen, learn, and reflect on how we can intentionally foster joy—in our programs, in our leadership, and in our relationships... Because joy is not an afterthought. It’s foundational.

Presenters: Thomas Horejes, Ph.D. and Heidi Klomhaus
