As a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience, I find this story profoundly distressing - it literally takes my breath away.
I strongly advocate for increased funding to equip law enforcement agencies nationwide with comprehensive, ongoing continuing education in mental health awareness and crisis intervention. It is essential for officers to be able to distinguish between symptoms of mental illness and deliberate, incorrigible behavior. This behavior can't be accepted as a consequence of being in a career of unpredictable behavior. This didn't need to happen to de-escalate the situation. By prioritizing these resources, we can better support both those in crisis and the dedicated professionals who respond to them. Making training mandatory could truly be the difference between life and death; it was for Ben.
