How do we prepare our herd for this weather?
Horses can be very adaptable to weather, but quick, drastic changes in weather are stressful to their sensitive systems. Here are some things that we do to protect our equine friends:
•Plenty of forage: eating and digesting hay warms their body
•Monitoring hydration and offering heated buckets or warmed water: many horses become dehydrated in the winter and they often don’t want to drink water if it is too cold
•Soaked feed: our horses eat their pelleted food soaked normally, but if yours don’t, now is the perfect time to serve their normal rations warmly soaked for extra hydration and a warm meal
•Layering as needed: horses are individual in how they grow their winter coat, some of ours need a blanket every day through the winter, while others very rarely do. Drastic temperature drop and wind calls for some extra layers for both humans and horses!
•Windbreak: shelter from the wind in temps this cold is crucial
•Extra bedding: adding extra bedding helps with warmth, and also encourages sleep when older horses may be feeling sore or uncomfortable from the frigid cold
•Close monitoring: any dramatic change in environment calls for extra monitoring to be sure they are doing well
