Meet Kirstie Hartley, our March Behind the Badge nurse and a dedicated member of the Saint Joseph Medical Center Progressive Care Unit (PCU). Kirstie was inspired to become a nurse after volunteering at a hospice facility, where she spent time with a patient during his final days. "I noticed he did not have any family at bedside. I stayed with him until he passed. He told me stories about his life, the loved ones he would be rejoined with soon, and some of his regrets that he had to learn to let go. Before he passed, he thanked me for listening and not letting him transition alone. After that, I knew I wanted to continue to make an impact on others’ lives in any way I could."

Coming to St. Joe has given Kirstie an opportunity to follow her dreams. "I'm surrounded by a great team on PCU. Our teamwork helps ensure our patients get the best quality care possible. I see myself working at SJHS for many years to come."

Jennifer Towne, PCU's clinical nursing supervisor, echoes the sentiment, “Kirstie is truly one of those people you can always count on. Her genuine kindness, empathy and readiness to step in for others make her a source of comfort and strength for both colleagues and patients. She brings heart to her role every day, which is what makes her such an outstanding charge nurse on the PCU.”

This month we’re proud to recognize the incredible athletic trainers who deliver high quality medical care to student athletes in our local high schools and colleges. Their partnership with our Sports Medicine physicians also supports the patients we serve every day at the Sports Medicine Institute.

Athletic trainers are highly educated health care professionals dedicated to helping athletes and patients stay active at school, work and in life. From emergency care and injury prevention to rehabilitation and wellness protection, they play a vital role in keeping our community moving.

In our clinics, ATs triage patients, assist with procedures, fit DME, manage referrals and create customized rehab programs that support safe recovery.

Join us in thanking our athletic trainers for everything they do to support athletes and patients year-round.

Today our infusion center was brightened in the best way. Thank you to the American Cancer Society volunteers for bringing daffodils to our patients. Your kindness and care make a meaningful difference on days that can feel especially heavy.

Daffodils have long been a symbol of hope, and today they reminded our patients that brighter days are ahead and that they are surrounded by a community that cares. Your generosity brought smiles, comfort and a reminder that no one faces cancer alone.
