It takes a combination of a special heart, along with education/training to jump in and perform life-saving measures on a stranger. New Prairie High School junior Kai, who is a student in our Legacy Pre-Nursing program with Ms. Daniel, RN, didn't hesitate when she witnessed an individual suffering from a cardiac emergency earlier this fall.
She stopped her car, directed her friends what to do, assessed the individual, and performed CPR until emergency services arrived. It all started with SHE STOPPED HER CAR. Cars continued to pass as she recalled everything she learned in the only CPR class she has attended just months prior.
Kai attends New Prairie High School, Indiana's 1st Project ADAM Heart Safe School. NPHS has evolved to a school that prioritizes student safety. Does this take time of students & staff to create a heart safe culture? Yes. Can it save a life? Yes.
NPHS is a school that lost a student (Mark Mayfield) to sudden cardiac arrest in 2017 only to examine its safety protocols, adopt cardiac emergency trainings, and save a parent suffering from sudden cardiac arrest in 2024. Mark inspired a movement in cardiac emergency preparedness in Indiana schools and his legacy continues to inspire people. That is pretty amazing!
Thank you Kai for stopping your car, for being brave and for being YOU!
