Meet Kirstie Hartley, our March Behind the Badge nurse and a dedicated member of the Saint Joseph Medical Center Progressive Care Unit (PCU). Kirstie was inspired to become a nurse after volunteering at a hospice facility, where she spent time with a patient during his final days. "I noticed he did not have any family at bedside. I stayed with him until he passed. He told me stories about his life, the loved ones he would be rejoined with soon, and some of his regrets that he had to learn to let go. Before he passed, he thanked me for listening and not letting him transition alone. After that, I knew I wanted to continue to make an impact on others’ lives in any way I could."
Coming to St. Joe has given Kirstie an opportunity to follow her dreams. "I'm surrounded by a great team on PCU. Our teamwork helps ensure our patients get the best quality care possible. I see myself working at SJHS for many years to come."
Jennifer Towne, PCU's clinical nursing supervisor, echoes the sentiment, “Kirstie is truly one of those people you can always count on. Her genuine kindness, empathy and readiness to step in for others make her a source of comfort and strength for both colleagues and patients. She brings heart to her role every day, which is what makes her such an outstanding charge nurse on the PCU.”
