Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a profile often associated with autism where everyday demands can trigger intense anxiety and a strong need to avoid them. This avoidance isn’t about being defiant or oppositional—it’s usually a response to feeling overwhelmed or a loss of control.

Individuals with a PDA profile may avoid demands in creative ways such as negotiating, distracting, delaying, or withdrawing. Even activities they enjoy can feel difficult when they are presented as a demand.

Support strategies that often help include reducing pressure, offering choices, using collaborative language, and focusing on emotional regulation and trust.

The more we understand the why behind behaviors, the better we can support individuals in ways that feel safe and empowering.

There’s a lot of laser content on the internet right now… and unfortunately not all of it is showing how it actually works.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is placement.

Photobiomodulation (laser therapy) works by delivering light energy that can pe*****te tissue. When we’re targeting the brain, that light has to pass through the scalp and the skull before it ever reaches brain tissue. Because of that, a significant amount of energy is lost along the way.

This is exactly why treatment guidelines and research protocols place the laser directly on the scalp or extremely close to it.

Holding a laser several inches away from the head dramatically reduces the energy that can pe*****te the tissue, which means it’s unlikely to produce the intended neurological effect.

Organizations like the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (WALT) emphasize proper positioning and technique because dose and placement matter when it comes to therapeutic outcomes.

Laser therapy can be an incredible tool — but like any therapeutic modality, it has to be used correctly and intentionally.

If you’re looking for a team that understands the science and applies laser therapy using evidence-based protocols,

When the brain isn’t balanced, learning and behavior can become much harder. 🧠

The brain has two hemispheres, and each side processes information in different ways. When these hemispheres communicate efficiently, the brain can integrate information smoothly—supporting attention, learning, emotional regulation, and coordination.

But when communication between the hemispheres is less efficient, children may experience challenges that show up in everyday life. This can look like difficulty focusing, trouble with reading or writing, emotional outbursts, poor coordination, or struggling to keep up in school.

Often, these challenges are misunderstood as lack of effort or motivation. In many cases, the issue isn’t effort—it’s how the brain is processing and integrating information.

Supporting hemispheric integration can help the brain work more as a unified system, making learning, behavior, and daily tasks easier for children.

Understanding how the brain works is an important step toward helping children reach their full potential. ✨

Communication looks different for every child—and that’s okay. 💛

Some children with autism also experience apraxia of speech, a motor planning challenge that makes it difficult for the brain to coordinate the movements needed for speech. They may know exactly what they want to say, but getting the words out can be incredibly hard.

This isn’t about effort, motivation, or intelligence.
It’s about motor planning and nervous system coordination. 🧠

When we understand what’s happening beneath the surface, we can shift from asking “Why aren’t they talking?” to asking “How can we better support their brain and body?”

Every child deserves to be heard—and communication can grow in many different ways along the journey. 🌱

If your child struggles with speech, you’re not alone. Support is available, and there are approaches designed to meet your child’s nervous system where it is.

🧠 4 Key Signs of ADHD in Kids

ADHD in children often shows up in four main areas. While every child can have moments like these, consistent patterns may signal ADHD:

1️⃣ Attention Difficulties
Kids with ADHD often struggle to stay focused. They may seem like they’re not listening, get easily distracted, make careless mistakes in schoolwork, or frequently lose things like homework, books, or toys.

2️⃣ Hyperactivity
Some children with ADHD have lots of energy and find it hard to sit still. They may fidget, wiggle in their seat, run or climb when it’s not appropriate, or constantly seem “on the go.”

3️⃣ Impulsivity
Impulsive behaviors can include blurting out answers, interrupting others, grabbing things without asking, or having difficulty waiting their turn.

4️⃣ Emotional Dysregulation
Children with ADHD can experience big emotions that are hard to manage. They may become frustrated quickly, have frequent meltdowns, or struggle to calm down when upset.

✨ Understanding these signs can help parents and teachers support kids early so they can succeed at school, at home, and with friends.

Most parents have never heard of retained reflexes… but they can quietly impact how a child learns, focuses, and regulates their emotions.

These reflexes are automatic movements babies are born with to help them survive and develop. Normally, they integrate as the brain matures.

But when they don’t fully integrate, children can struggle in ways that are often misunderstood.

Many parents are told their child just needs to “try harder,” “pay attention,” or “calm down.” But sometimes the issue isn’t behavior — it’s neurological development that needs support.

The good news? The brain is incredibly adaptable, and there are ways to help these reflexes integrate so kids can feel more in control of their bodies and learning.

If you’re noticing several of these signs and feel like your child may need more support, don’t ignore that instinct.

👉 Watch the video to learn more about these signs.
👉 And if you feel like your child needs deeper support, reach out about our intensive program designed to help children integrate retained reflexes and build stronger neurological foundations.

You don’t have to figure it all out on your own — and your child deserves support that truly meets their needs.

For years, I thought my daughter was just “a little different.”
A little more emotional. A little more forgetful. A little more intense.

I told myself she’d grow out of it. That she just needed more structure, more reminders, more patience.

But looking back… there were signs I didn’t understand.

Not because I didn’t care.
Not because I wasn’t paying attention.
But because ADHD doesn’t always look the way people expect—especially in girls.

Sometimes it looks like daydreaming.
Sometimes it looks like big emotions.
Sometimes it looks like trying so hard but still feeling like you’re falling behind.

When I finally started learning about ADHD, so many moments suddenly made sense. Moments where she felt misunderstood. Moments where I wish I had known how to support her sooner.

This video shares 10 signs of ADHD I missed in my daughter — not to bring guilt, but to bring awareness. Because so many parents are doing their best with information they simply don’t have yet.

If even one parent watches this and recognizes their child sooner, it’s worth sharing.

And if you’re a parent realizing these things now… please know this:
You didn’t fail. You’re learning. And that matters more than you know. ❤️

I love when our community asks for the research, so I wanted to take a moment to highlight an interesting study.

Researchers published a paper in Clinical and Experimental Biomedicine looking at low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, and its potential role in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity. In this study, researchers explored whether applying low-intensity light could support brain function by improving cellular energy production and helping reduce inflammation in the brain.

The findings suggest that photobiomodulation may support neurological function and could potentially influence certain cognitive and behavioral processes associated with autism. While the results are encouraging, the authors note that larger clinical trials are still needed to better understand how and when this therapy may be most effective.

Studies like this are important because they show where science is heading. Researchers are continuing to explore new ways to support brain health and better understand the biology behind autism.

If you’re someone who values evidence and wants to see progress in this space, continued research and funding are essential. The more we invest in studying innovative approaches, the closer we get to real answers for individuals and families.

Families travel from all over the world to work with OTEIM — and the reason is simple: we approach development differently.

Most therapy models focus on the skills you can see: speech, behavior, handwriting, attention. But development doesn’t start there.

The brain develops from the bottom up. Foundational systems like the brainstem, sensory processing, and early neurological pathways develop first. These systems support regulation, motor control, and how the brain communicates with the body.

When those systems are under stress or not functioning efficiently, higher-level skills can be much harder to build.

At OTEIM, we focus on those foundational systems first.

Our approach may include:
• Primitive reflex integration
• Nervous system regulation work
• Low-level laser therapy
• Neurofeedback
• Highly individualized occupational and speech therapy

Every program is customized to the child’s neurological profile.

We’re not just working on the symptoms you see — we’re supporting the systems underneath them.

That’s why many families who come to us have already tried several therapies before finding OTEIM. Not because those therapies were wrong — but because the starting point matters.

If you’d like to learn more about our approach comment INTENSIVE or send us a message.
