The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it. For all of us. It effects seniors more than any other group.
This morning we got a call from a family who needs to find care for their loved one who is currently living with them, but requires much more care than they can provide, but they are still very hesitant to move them. They want them to stay at home. We see this scenario over and over. It’s 10 times harder for you to care for your loved one, than letting a professional Care Home care for them. Not to mention much more Safe for them to be supervised 24-hrs a day. The Families main concern was “is if was safe to move my mom with the COVID-19 pandemic still going on”. This is a great question. While it is not the best of circumstances, you can do it safely. The Care home (RCFE) should be testing its employees before each shift. Care homes are only letting medical professionals inside for Medically necessary visits. All other visitors are visiting through a window with 6ft in between. The Administrator will be able to help you get a COVID test for your loved one before they move in. They should be able to do this when the Physicians Report is completed. It is also mandatory for your loved one to get a COVID test before they move in. The Facility may even be able to have someone one to your loved one to provide a COVID test.
Care homes have been very vigilant in keeping their residents, and employees safe during this time. Sanitizing, and cleaning any contact surfaces multiple times daily. They should be able to show you their COVID protocols when you are touring the home. Most RCFE’s have not had a single case of COVID with their residents, or employees.
If your loved one requires more care than is currently provided to them... That is much more dangerous, than finding the right home to provide the right care to keep them safe.

At OCSS we understand it takes a special person to care for the Elderly. It’s not for everyone. You really need to love what you do so that you can give them the best quality of life possible. What makes is all worth it to you? Why do you do what you do?

My wife brought these “I Can Do it” affirmation cards to the office. Each morning we have been having our caregivers, and our residents pick a card. there’s no coincidence usually, the card you pick is just what you need to hear. Sometimes you get the same card if you times in one week. It’s because it’s what you need to hear.

Stay positive, humble, and most of all grateful. Remember to send out positive thoughts and energy to the world.

“Life is a journey”. It’s very rare to get anything right the first time. As my wife say “It just a mistake, won it, learn from it, and move Forward. The work would be boring if we were all perfect”.
Resilience is one of the most underrated qualities in a person. We all hit bumps in the road, we all have set backs. You may fail, but your never a failure until you give up. The difference is:

“CHAMIONS KEEP PLAYING INTIL THEY GET IT RIGHT”

keep trying, thinking, put forth the effort. Take action, most important Don’t Give up. It’s your work, you can right the line you live your life on... Hold on, it’s darkest before the light dawns.

It can be very tough transitioning to caring for a loved one who was cared for you. In the US we typically do not have multiple generations of a family living under the same roof like many other cultures.
caring for a loved one in your family can be very stressful. I truly feel it is at least 10 times harder for someone to Be a caregiver for a family member, then it is to have a professional caregiver step in to help. And it’s no easy feat for a professional caregiver. Caregiving is not a job for everyone, and caregivers are very underappreciated.

If you’re at that point where you need extra help to care for Your love one in your family… You are not alone. Don’t give up, reach out to someone, anyone. Help us out there.
