Claudication refers to muscle pain triggered by activity and relieved with rest that is due to narrowed or blocked arteries. The arterial restriction reduces blood flow and oxygen to the leg. Claudication is a symptom of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).

Did you know that 1 in every 3 people over age 50 with diabetes likely has peripheral artery disease (PAD)?

Diabetes is a risk factor for PAD. Patients with PAD have an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke. Treatments can range from simple lifestyle changes to compression stockings to minimally invasive procedures. If left untreated, PAD can lead to Critical Limb Ischemia and potential limb amputation.

How Is Critical Limb Ischemia Diagnosed?
CLI is commonly diagnosed in one of two ways: an Ankle Brachial Index or Angiography.

Ankle Brachial Index: This test compares the blood pressure in your ankle of the suspected leg with the blood pressure in your arm. A significant difference in the two pressures might indicate a blockage exists somewhere in the leg.

Angiography: For this test, the doctor uses x-ray and dye injected through an IV to examine blood flow and look for blockages.

Venous leg ulcers are one of the more commonly seen wounds. They typically occur on the medial lower leg and are a symptom of Venous Disease. Diseased and faulty vein valves cause high pressure and capillary leakage which breaks the skin down. The most common treatment for venous ulcers is compression therapy. Compression therapy will force fluid back into the capillaries and increase blood flow to the skin. Compression therapy is most commonly applied with medical bandaging or compression stockings.

Did you know diabetic foot ulcers (also called DFU’s) are the most common type of lower extremity wound that can lead to a potential amputation? Diabetic foot ulcers form due to a variety of factors including lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, irritation, and diabetes management. Up to 25% of diabetics with diabetic foot ulcers require an amputation.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when blood moves too slowly through your veins, and a blood clot is formed. Typically, in a healthy vein, the pressure from vein walls creates a compression to help push the blood through the vein. In a damaged vein, venous disease causes the blood to pool and expands the veins, causing blood to flow slower. DVT typically occurs in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can lead to life-threatening complications. Some risk factors include smoking, obesity, prolonged lack of movement, central venous catheter, and varicose veins. DVT can be prevented by moving around as soon as possible after having been confined to bed, such as after surgery, illness, or injury. When sitting for long periods of time, make sure to exercise your legs such as raising and lowering your toes or heels. It is also important to wear loose-fitting clothing or compression stockings.

Atherosclerosis is plaque that has built up inside your artery walls. Plaque is made up of deposits of fats, cholesterol, and other substances. Atherosclerosis in the peripheral arteries is the most common cause of PAD.

The circulatory system is made up of a complicated network of arteries and veins that carry oxygen and nourishment through the blood to every part of the body. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when there is a problem within the veins and arteries. Arteries are what supply oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body. If an artery becomes blocked, known as peripheral artery disease, and can no longer deliver blood to other areas of the body, such as the foot and lower leg, serious problems can occur.

An office-based lab is an an extension of a physician's office, where procedures such as X-rays or radiology are performed. An outpatient, office-based lab offers a more personalized level of care for patients seeking endovascular procedures & cardiovascular care. An OBL does not treat acutely ill patients, which likely decreases the chances of exposure to HAIs (Hospital Acquired Infections); an additional benefit, many patients often pay up to 50% less than an inpatient setting for the same procedure!

More specifically we offer:
Comfortable Outpatient Environment - Innovative diagnostic equipment, customized procedures, and easy to navigate.
Same Day Discharge - Overnight stays are typically not needed. Most patients can return to their homes within 4-6 hours!
One-on-One Nursing Care - Each patient has one nurse that continuously interacts with them.

Diabetic foot ulcers (also called DFU’s) are the most common type of lower extremity wound that can lead to a potential amputation. Diabetic foot ulcers are commonly found on the bottom of the feet near the larger pressure points. DFU’s form due to a variety of factors including lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, irritation, and diabetes management. Up to 25% of diabetics with diabetic foot ulcers require an amputation.
