Today the Mississippi Senate approved $15million for the child care payment program! There are still more steps to go until it's official, but we wanted to take a moment to say a HUGE Thank You to the Senate for their support and leadership for Mississippi working families! Prioritizing an investment in child care is not only a win for working parents and their employers TODAY-- but also is a win for young children who get to learn and grow in safe, educational environments-- setting them up for success in the future!

Did you know that child care for two children in Mississippi can cost MORE than housing? When parents can’t afford child care, but have to go to work, they have to make hard choices like leaving children as young as 7 home alone. No parent should have to make choices between keeping their child safe and the job they need, that’s why an appropriation of funding for CCPP is SO important this year!

For Mary Hannah Mills, a childhood love for helping young children has grown into a calling rooted in purpose, preparation and service.

A native of Winona, Mills attended Mississippi State University from 2012-2018, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in human development and family science, with an emphasis in child development. What began as a natural connection with young children evolved during her college years into a deeper commitment to understanding how they learn, grow and thrive.

“I strongly believe that early childhood is the most important period of development,” Mills said. “It lays the foundation for lifelong learning, confidence and overall well-being.”

This belief now guides her work as project manager of the Nurturing Homes Initiative through MSU Extension Early Childhood Programs. The initiative provides one-on-one support to in-home family child care providers across Mississippi, helping ensure children receive developmentally appropriate, high-quality early learning experiences.

In her role, Mills provides ongoing support and guidance to eight child care technical assistants and one assessment coordinator. She also develops professional development opportunities tailored to the needs of providers, children and families across the state.

“My favorite part of this role is creating professional development that truly meets providers where they are,” she said. “When we invest in early learning, we invest in stronger families and stronger communities.”

Mills also oversees the Child Development Associate program, which prepares early childhood educators with the foundational knowledge, skills and professionalism needed to work effectively with young children. Her passion for teacher preparation is rooted in a simple but powerful conviction: every child deserves access to high-quality early education, and every educator deserves the tools and support to provide it.

It is especially meaningful for Mills to serve in the MSU School of Human Sciences, the same place she once spent countless hours as a student learning from faculty mentors who shaped her academic journey. Now, she contributes to that same legacy by supporting the next generation of educators.

Her connection to MSU Extension runs even deeper. Some of her favorite childhood memories include attending Extension events and 4-H activities alongside her grandmother. Today, as part of Extension, she carries forward a mission that helped shape her own upbringing.

“What a privilege it is,” Mills said, “to be part of something that shaped my childhood and now to serve children and families across the state through that same mission.”
