Plants use plant available Silicon (H4SiO4) to perform a variety of functions. At the cellular level H4Si04 is used to increase the strength of plant tissue cell walls. This function promotes stronger mechanical properties from roots to shoots; the roots are thicker and have greater mass, the stalks are stronger and grow taller, the branches are sturdier and able to hold more weight, the leaves are thicker and bigger allowing the plant to process more sunlight, and the plant has an increased ability to orient itself to the sun. This fact allows consumers to see dramatic improvement in biomass, yield, overall appearance, and the longevity of product. Bigger, stronger, thicker plants are also able to resist invasion and destruction from pests, mold and pathogenic fungi. Silicon quickly accumulates at the site of infection and assists in slowing and in some cases preventing any further spread. In the March Issue of Acres Today: The Voice of Eco-Agriculture. Dr. Joseph Heckman of Rutgers University states, “of the many benefits associated with enhanced silicon nutrition, the one that appears most outstanding is suppression of powdery mildew disease on a variety of crops.” Furthermore, he states, “that supplying crops with plant-available silicon can suppress disease, reduce insect attack, improve environmental stress tolerance and increase crop productivity.”
