What is Piriformis Syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular condition in which the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks and down the leg. It is often mistaken for sciatica caused by a herniated disc or spinal issues.

Causes of Piriformis Syndrome

Muscle tightness or spasms in the piriformis

Overuse injuries (e.g., excessive running or prolonged sitting)

Trauma or direct injury to the buttock

Anatomical variations where the sciatic nerve runs through or under the piriformis

Postural imbalances and weak gluteal muscles

Symptoms

Pain in the buttock, often worsening with sitting, walking, or climbing stairs

Radiating pain down the back of the thigh and leg (mimicking sciatica)

Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot

Difficulty sitting for prolonged periods
