In December 2021, Phil Hageman died suddenly of an underlying heart condition. Phil was a dear friend and colleague to many of us. He was our first University of Montana Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency graduate in 2018 and was an integral part of our UMPT team while he was in Missoula. Phil graduated from Northwestern University’s Fellowship program in 2021 and was an adjunct instructor in the Northwestern University Physical Therapy program when he passed.

Our colleagues at Northwestern have created an exercise challenge and scholarship fund in Phil’s honor. Scroll and read the next pages for details, but essentially the challenge is to exercise (run, walk, bike, swim, etc.) 100 miles in the month of May. You can upload photos to social media using the hashtag . To donate to the scholarship set up in Phil’s name, to support future Fellows, either contact Vic Maurer at Victor.maurer@northwestern.edu or go online to http://wewill.northwestern.edu/PT and donate to “Philip A. Hageman ‘21 PTF Scholarship Fund”

Happy Friday Missoula!
Recent Clinic Happenings: Steve Ferdig, DPT showing us how to use the Redcord system we have in the clinic. Redcord is used in treatment to increase neuromuscular function and help facilitate correct movement patterns (not to mention looking pretty fun!) Ask one of our therapists about it to learn more next time you’re in!

Photographed here is an ultrasound of the abdominal musculature. Pelvic floor musculature is another common anatomical location to see with the ultrasound. We can see each muscle layer and the fascia that separates and connects it all. The imaging can be used as real time biofeedback to promote contraction and relaxation of different muscles. Do you know how to properly control your pelvic floor or abdominals? Seeing your muscle contract can help you learn to properly utilize these muscles, in an effort for improved motor coordination, control, and strength, for better function and comfort with tasks in your day!

At the UMPT Clinic, we work with active second and third year doctoral students in the University of Montana Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science program. Our student physical therapists spend their mornings actively learning in the classroom. In the afternoon, they put their skills into action at the clinic, with immediate supervision from a preceptor, who is both a professor at the university and acting physical therapist in the clinic. Students have 1-2 patients/clients each, allowing them to focus on you and why you are being seen at our clinic. They continuously learn, research and plan for your injury/pain/limitation to provide you with the best care.

Make an appointment at the UMPT Clinic and work with these smart, caring, and happy faces!

Let us introduce you to some of our student physical therapists working with Troy Adam, DPT Neurologic Specialist! (Left to Right)

We would like to welcome students back to school! While you are seated at your desk for school or work, keep in mind these simple tips to improve your work station and decrease pain! If they don't work, set up an appointment at UMPT and have one of our orthopedic specialists work with you! -------------- 1. Position your monitor directly in front of you an arm's length away with the top of the monitor at eye level and tip it back about 10-20 degrees. -------------- 2. Position your keyboard level with the elbows and directly in front of your body. Your wrists should be straight and shoulders relaxed. ------------- 3. Pick a chair with adequate back support. Allow your thighs to be parallel to the floor and feet flat on the ground. -------------- 4. Position your desk high enough to allow the legs to fit under the work surface. therapy

We recently said goodbye to our trusty Kin-Com, and welcomed a new addition to the UMPT family--the HUMAC electromechanical dynamometer! Housed in the Movement Science Lab, the HUMAC allows us a myriad of strength testing and treatment options. Our patient here has significant knee pain in certain ranges of motion, which makes strengthening difficult. Once we found her max isometric strength, we were able to train the coordination of her quad musculature in pain-free positions. She was fully fatigued after this session! If your patient needs best-practice strength testing, let us know! We can get them in for a single visit so you have the best possible information to work with.

We know it’s cold, we know 2021 has already been a lot to handle, and we know you have a lot of things on your to-do list. The UMPT clinic is open, warm, and accepting new patients at this time, so you check ‘see someone about ski injury’ off of that list ASAP! Check your coat at the door (or don’t, it’s probably very practical and Bernie-approved) and let us get you moving on to your next errand pain-free.
