Celebrating Heart Health Month: Keeping Our Seniors' Hearts Strong

February is Heart Health Month, a perfect time to focus on keeping our hearts in top shape—especially for our beloved seniors. As we age, heart health becomes even more important, and small lifestyle changes can make a big impact. At Cozy Living Community, we believe in promoting wellness through mindful habits, nutritious choices, and an active lifestyle. Here is a few practical and easy-to-follow tips to help seniors maintain a strong and healthy heart.

Exercise

Aging becomes the main risk factor after the age 65 years old resulting in increased oxygen demand and decreased cardiac work capacity. Lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentary behaviors is an effective tool for improving the mortality rate in elderly residents with CVD.

Diet

Individuals are encouraged to eat the “rainbow” meaning to eat a wide variety of colors, meaning vegetables and fruits. Limit red meat, processed meats, and full fat dairy products in this resident’s diet. Incorporate healthy fats such as oily fish once a week, olive oil, avocadoes and nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Reduce Stress

Managing stress is good for your health and well-being. Negative psychological health / mental health is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. But positive psychological health is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and death.

National Send A Card To A Friend Day on February 7th reminds us to send friendly cheer through the mail. We do that by sending a note or message on a card to the friends we hold dear. Throughout the year, we often think about our friends. We wonder how they are, miss them, and remember fond memories of times shared.
Sending a card to someone for a variety of reasons dates back to ancient times. The Chinese would send elegantly designed messages as well as the Egyptians, though on different types of paper. During the Rennaisance, greeting cards gained popularity for specific holidays and events. Victorian times increased the use of the greeting card for Valentine's Day, Christmas, birthdays, and more.

The first Saturday of every month is National Play Outside Day. This National Day presents opportunity to remind everyone to get outside and enjoy the fresh air through play. All year long, we are given numerous opportunities to get outside and play. But sometimes, life, responsibilities, and distractions keep us from spending time in the fresh air as we should. National Play Outside Day is a reminder to stretch our legs and expend some energy in the great outdoors.

January Fun Facts
(Senior Edition)

As we wrap up the month of January, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the season of new beginnings and share a few fun facts—especially ones that celebrate seniors, community, and connection, which are at the heart of everything we do.

New Year, New Habits
Did you know adults over 65 are more likely than any other age group to stick to healthy routines once they start them? January is the perfect month to reinforce daily movement, social engagement, and wellness—something we focus on year-round in Assisted Living.
Research shows that staying socially active can reduce cognitive decline in older adults by up to 70%. January often inspires fresh connections—game nights, group activities, and shared conversations that turn neighbors into friends.

January 2026 MVP
One of our Company’s Core Values is “Play as a Team”. When caregivers collaborate effectively, residents receive better care overall, ensuring safety, and promoting the well-being of residents. Each month our caregivers vote on their Most Valuable Player (MVP), the coworker who is a team player and a delight to work with. Congratulations Rachel!

Happy Flashback Friday!

Today we’re taking a moment to rewind to our January Staff Meeting, where we kicked off the new year with purpose, teamwork, and a little fun.

During the meeting, we reviewed our company and department goals, completed a company check-up, and spent time reflecting on our personal core values and goals for the year ahead. These conversations help ensure that our mission and values remain at the center of everything we do.

Of course, no great meeting is complete without treats! Staff enjoyed a hot chocolate bar and delicious cookies from Great American Cookie, which made the meeting even sweeter.

We also watched a clip from our leadership training, and Jo, our Chief Nursing Officer, reviewed our Warm Welcome Policy—a detailed checklist our caregivers follow to ensure every new resident admission feels safe, supported, and truly welcomed from day one.

To wrap things up, we divided into teams for this quarter’s challenge and had a blast with a team-building game where each group had to move and stack cups using only a balloon—no hands allowed! The laughter, collaboration, and creativity on display perfectly reflected the spirit of our team.

We’re proud of the dedication, compassion, and teamwork our staff brings to our community every day. Thank you for being part of what makes our facility such a special place.

Here’s to continued growth, connection, and excellence in care!
