Nutrition plays a huge role in keeping our teeth healthy. Key vitamins in dental health include vitamin A, C, D, K2 and minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin A- helps saliva production which helps with keep our teeth clean and fight off decay causing bacteria. Food items to include are farm fresh free range eggs (to get that orange yolk), liver and orange colored foods like sweet potatoes and carrots. 🥕🍠🍳

Vitamin C- helps with gum tissue health like protections from inflammation/gingivitis and helps collagen production which keeps our gum tissues strong. Important food sources include citrus fruits, strawberries and bell peppers. 🍋🍓🫑

Vitamin D- helps with calcium and phosphorus absorption and promotes bone density. Food sources include fatty fish like salmon and fortified dairy products and sunlight. 🍣🥛☀️

Vitamin K2- helps calcium bind to teeth and helps with bone maintenance which protects from bone loss aka periodontal disease. Food items to include are leafy greens, broccoli and Brussel sprouts. 🥗🥬🥦

Calcium/ phosphorus- our teeth are made of these minerals, so incorporating them in our diet helps strengthen our bones and teeth. Food sources include protein rich foods like meat, eggs and cheese. 🍗🥩🧀

These nutrients reduce inflammation, decrease decay rates and strengthen our teeth. 🦷❤️🍽️

🦠Dental Abscesses are infections in the tooth that are typically caused by untreated decay bacteria.

🦷The decay grows/ eats away so much tooth structure that it reaches the nerve and infects the tooth.

🩸When decay bacteria reaches the nerve it causes pain because the nerve of the tooth is where the life of the tooth is, it has blood flow and sensation.

There are two options when treating a dental abscess.
1️⃣One being, extract the tooth to remove the source of infection, which is the tooth itself.
2️⃣Two being, root canal therapy, which is a way to save the tooth by cleaning out the nerve of the tooth and replacing it with a filler material. The tooth is technically dead because it has no blood supply, but you still have a tooth there to chew on.

✳️✳️Many patients ask if antibiotics could help save the tooth. While that is a good thought, it doesn’t help in this scenario. The antibiotics do kill off the decay bacteria, which does help the tooth to feel better, however, since there is a path leading to the nerve of the tooth, it’s only a matter of time before more bacteria find its way to the nerve again and re-infect it.

🦷The tooth is the source of infection so it must be treated with dentistry.

A shout out to our dental assistant team in honor of DA week! Start to finish, these ladies are a part of all the dental procedures and we could not do it without them! They bring the fun and are willing to go out of their way to give our patients top notch care! 💗🦷

At the Dental Care Center we strive to provide painless dentistry as best as we can. Which is why we have invested in three tools to help our patients have a better experience. 🫶🏽

1️⃣ Solea Laser- this is an anesthesia-free way of removing decay from a tooth. The laser tricks the tooth’s pain receptors so it does not feel pain when cutting into the tooth. Typically patients do not need to be numb when using the laser which is a great option for kids and adults. Generally patients will feel a cold sensation when the laser is working. The laser is limited to the extent of the decay, meaning that it works better and more pain free with smaller cavities.

2️⃣ Nitrous Oxide with Oxygen- this is a service we provide to help our patients feel relaxed and comfortable. This service works with our nervous system and helps calm our patients. This is a great option if we have patients that are nervous to get work done or have had past dental trauma.

3️⃣STA Computerized Injection device- our wand numbing system is a very precise way of delivering anesthetic. The systematic delivery provides comfort when needing to be numb. We have many patients say that they didn’t feel anything, or that it was very minimal, when getting numb.

We love our patients and we always want them to have a safe and comfortable experience. ❤️

⁉️Did you know that the health of your mouth directly correlates to if you have diabetes or not⁉️

Diabetes can show up through symptoms in the mouth like gingivitis, decay, bad breath, burning mouth syndrome and oral infections/ delayed healing. 🌀

Oral health and systemic health join hand in hand. When there is high blood sugar throughout the bloodstream, it shows up in the mouth too. It’s all connected. High blood sugar feeds bad bacteria in mouth which leads to a more acidic environment, increased plaque, gum disease, decay and dry mouth! 🦠

Managing blood sugar and proper oral hygiene is key when it comes to teeth and diabetes. Less sugar, more floss. 🦷

Be sure to check in with your Doctors, Dentists and hygienist for more information 🤓

Fun fact 🤓
Did you know that overnight we grow bacteria in our mouths even though we are just sleeping?! When we wake up in the morning it is imperative to brush it off our teeth. If we do not, and wait until after breakfast, we are feeding that bacteria all the food we just ate. When bacteria eats our food, it produces acid, and acid breaks down our teeth. Then if we brush right after eating we are brushing all that acid onto our teeth which can ruin the enamel, causing it to breakdown quicker. This causes decay. 🦷🦠

So, try to switch the morning brushing habit to before breakfast, not after! 💡🤯
