Have you ever been told you are cavity prone?!

Many patients in our practice have this condition of being decay prone, which can be frustrating, especially when they feel like they do all the things and take all the recommendations seriously.

There are many reason why decay happens:
crowded teeth
Mouth breathing
Dry mouth
Unbalanced oral microbiome
High sugar diet
Highly processed food diet
Improper home care routine
Acidic drinks (coffee, energy drinks, pop, juice etc. )

If this is you, here a few tips to take away from this post.

#1 Mouthtape/ Dr. Jen’s dry mouth gel
A huge reason for decay is having a dry mouth. This can develop from medications or mouth breathing. Both create an oral environment that lacks saliva. Our saliva is our buffer system to protect our teeth. When we lack our buffer system, our oral environment is more acidic, creating the perfect environment for decay to flourish. Using a dry mouth gel helps to stimulate saliva flow and using mouthtape prevents mouth breathing at night.

#2 Decrease sugar/ processed carbs/ acidic beverages
Lowering sugar consumption is huge when trying to decrease decay. Sugar is the fuel to the fire. Decay causing bacteria LOVE sugar. The less sugar you eat, the less decay causing bacteria.

#3 Tongue scrape and floss
Both tongue scraping and flossing help to disrupt bacteria in the mouth. Disruption is key to preventing decay because it knocks down the bacteria. Bacteria grow throughout the day and night and so the only way to prevent the growth is physically disrupting the growth with tooth brush bristles, floss and tongue scraping. The more we disrupt the bacteria the less chance it has to grow, which causes decay.

At the Dental Care Center, we strive to be the best for our patients. We are always learning, growing and expanding our knowledge with best practices for you! 🤓

🦷Somewhat new to our office is early intervention orthodontics for our younger patients. Typically, this involves expansion of the upper and/or lower jaw to create wider arch width for permanent teeth to come in with better positioning. It also expands the airway for better breathing and overall health.

🦷We are in a time where the human jaw is the smallest it has ever been. This has been happening over many years, due to the food we eat.

🦷Back in hunter-gatherer times, our food was a lot harder and we had to chew our food a lot more. This chewing force allowed for our jaws to be wider and allowed for our wisdom teeth to fit in our mouth because we needed them for eating. It also allowed for our airway to be wider so there was not even talk of sleep apnea. It just wasn’t a thing.

🦷Now our food is soft, highly processed and doesn’t require the same chewing force to eat. Over time this has shrunk our jaw width, creating narrow jaws and airways.

🦷Early intervention orthodontics not only impacts alignment of the teeth, but it also helps to widen the airway for better sleep and overall health for our younger patient population.

📲📞If you have questions, please ask us at your next dental appointment or call us for a consultation. We would love to help, not only your dental health, but your overall health longevity. 🫶🏽🦷😊

♻️Creating a sufficient airway allows our body to thrive due to oxygen optimization. We sleep better, we have energy and our body performs better. This is health.

♻️To create a sufficient airway, it starts with our teeth!! In an ideal world, our dental arches would be wide and we wouldn’t have crowded teeth (which comes to be by being breastfed). However most people, have crowding and narrow arches due to being bottle fed and eating soft food.

♻️This can be fixed by widening the palate and creating room for our teeth by using a palatal expansion appliance. Over time this appliance widens the dental arches to create a wider airway. Thus, allows more oxygen inflow when breathing.
