🧠 Dementia Education Series – Did You Know?

Why do UTIs cause challenging dementia behaviors?

If someone with dementia suddenly gets MUCH worse very quickly, ask their doctor to test for a UTI. Let me explain why this is so important.

Dementia symptoms like:
• Increased agitation
• Sudden confusion
• Refusals
• Sundowning behaviors
• Personality changes

👉 Typically do NOT go from “okay” to “severe” overnight as part of normal dementia progression.

When behaviors change rapidly, it is often caused by an infection — and urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common reason.

Many individuals living with dementia use incontinence products, which increases the risk of UTIs. In older adults — especially those with dementia — a UTI doesn’t always show typical symptoms like burning or fever. Instead, it can show up as sudden confusion or extreme behavior changes.

💡 Always rule out medical causes first when behaviors shift quickly.

Early detection can prevent hospitalization and bring your loved one back to baseline much faster.
