Alabama’s Medical Age of Consent Has Changed- Effective October 1, 2025

Under Senate Bill 101 (SB101), Alabama’s medical age of consent will increase from 14 to 16.
This update impacts medical, dental, and mental health services for minors across the state.

What’s New

✔️ The age of CONSENT RISES from 14 → 16.
✔️ Teens 16 & 17 may consent to their own care WITHOUT parent or guardian approval.
✔️ Youth UNDER 16 will need parental consent, EXCEPT in certain cases (emergency, pregnancy, STIs, or substance-use treatment).
✔️ Parents now have more access to their child’s health records UNLESS restricted by court order or investigation.
✔️ Schools MUST have written parental permission for students UNDER 16 to receive counseling and notify parents annually of these policies.

🧠 Why It Matters

This law INCREASES parental involvement for younger teens WHILE PRESERVING PRIVACY for those 16 and older.

Providers are encouraged to update consent forms, policies, and communication procedures to reflect this change that went into effect on October 1, 2025.
