February is Heart Health Month, and the Mobile County Health Department is urging residents to “Move More, Know Your Numbers” by getting active and checking their blood pressure regularly. High blood pressure is a silent condition that often has no symptoms but greatly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, making routine screening and early management essential.

This February, community groups throughout Mobile County are teaming up to share tips on keeping your heart healthy. You can stop by local churches, barbershops, community centers, and libraries for free screenings and quick counseling sessions to learn what your numbers mean and how to take action. Everyone is also encouraged to join a Heart Health Month walk at nearby parks or workplaces — because just 30 minutes of brisk walking most days can boost heart health and help manage blood pressure.

“Normal blood pressure is less than 120 over 80, and knowing your numbers is one of the most important things you can do for your heart,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “This February, we are asking people to know their blood pressure, there are multiple opportunities to check your blood pressures.”

The community is encouraged to participate by attending a nearby outreach event, talking with their healthcare provider about blood pressure, and taking simple daily steps — moving more, eating less sodium, and staying tobacco-free — to protect their hearts. For a list of Heart Health Month activities and screening locations, visit your local community activities site or follow the Mobile County Health Department on social media.

From MCHD Emergency Preparedness: Bitterly cold temperatures continue to be expected this weekend. Dangerously cold wind chills dip into the single digits and lower teens for most locations Saturday morning and again Saturday night into Sunday morning, with lower 20's during the day Saturday.

An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for late Friday night through late Sunday morning. A prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures is now expected for interior portions of the forecast area along and north of the Highway 84 corridor, beginning midnight Friday night through late Sunday morning. There is also increasing confidence on areas further south struggling to make it above freezing during the day Saturday excluding coastal counties of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

A Wind Advisory has been issued for coastal portions of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle late Friday night through Sunday morning, with the potential to expand it to include more of the area if confidence increases on higher gusts inland. A Gale Warning has been issued for offshore gulf waters, Mobile Bay, and Mississippi Sound Friday night through Sunday morning. Low water levels due to strong offshore winds may also occur that could result in hazardous boating/shipping navigation for bays and sounds.

As part of ongoing upgrades throughout the city’s Central Business District, three streets in Downtown Mobile will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic this week. This will affect traffic near the Keeler Memorial Building.

As part of the Downtown Street Optimization Project, Scott Street and Bayou Street between Government and Congress streets will be converted from one-way to two-way traffic overnight on Wednesday. North Jefferson Street between Spring Hill Avenue and Congress Street will also be converted to two-way traffic during that same time. The work will take place overnight on Wednesday, and motorists can expect the new two-way configurations by Thursday.

Drivers should pay attention to the temporary “No Parking” signs, as on-street parking will not be allowed on these streets after construction begins at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Please note that the sections of Bayou, Scott and Jefferson streets that intersect with St. Louis Street will remain closed until Feb. 18 to accommodate work happening as part of the St. Louis Street “Complete Streets” project.

You can find more information about the project at cityofmobile.org/downtown-street-optimization/.
