✅ Advantages of REMS Echolight over DEXA
1. No radiation
DEXA uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone mineral density (BMD), which still exposes the patient to ionizing radiation.
REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) is ultrasound-based — completely radiation-free — making it safer for repeated use, children, and pregnant women.
2. Portable & bedside-capable
DEXA machines are large, stationary, and require a dedicated room.
Echolight devices are compact and portable — you can take them to clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, or even community screenings.
3. Faster & easier
A REMS scan takes about 3-5 minutes and is very simple for the patient (lying down, minimal positioning).
DEXA typically takes longer and requires precise positioning.
4. More than just density
DEXA gives you areal BMD (g/cm²) and a T-score/Z-score, but it does not assess bone quality directly.
REMS analyzes the microarchitecture and quality of bone tissue, in addition to BMD, via spectral analysis of ultrasound signals — which can potentially improve fracture risk prediction.
5. No specific room or shielding needed
Because it’s ultrasound and radiation-free, REMS can be operated in any office space, unlike DEXA, which needs a shielded room to meet regulatory standards
