Talking to Yourself Out Loud
Before you laugh, hear me out.
Externalizing your thoughts, actually saying them out loud rather than just cycling them in your head, has been shown to reduce activation in the amygdala and increase cognitive control. In other words, it helps your thinking brain get back in the driver's seat. Talk to yourself as you would a dear friend.
Talking to yourself is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a regulatory strategy. Healers, therapists, coaches, and teachers have known this intuitively for a long time. Now neuroscience agrees.
This is post 3 of 6 in my series on practices that look unconventional but are rooted in real science. Do you talk to yourself? Completely normal. You are in good company.
