I am a Board Certified General Surgeon with a past trauma career who assists in plastic surgeries and spinal cord stimulator / spinal pain pump surgeries. I am also an Acupuncturist who injects Botox as an extension of Acupuncture. Many of my Botox point selections are related Acupuncture points for migraine headaches and wrinkle prevention. 40% of my clinical time is spent at work is spent on Acupuncture, and 50% of my time is spent with cosmetic injections for Botox, Fillers, and Veins, and 10% of my time is spent assisting in surgeries. In a usual clinic day, it is common for me to use over 200 units of Botox, 3 syringes of dermal fillers, and see more than 6 acupuncture patients. Outside of my clinical time, I also spend a great deal of time as an administrator of Surgical Artistry - the combined medical office for myself and my wife, Dr. Tammy Wu, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. We have been surgeons in Modesto since 2003. I am an author for MedicalSpaMD a resource for plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and aesthetic physicians. I'm also a member of the marketing department of the Cooperative of American Physicians based in Los Angeles. My hobbies include piano, violin, marathon running, creating websites and social media. HISTORY:

Established in 2006. I (Dr. Calvin Lee) came to Modesto in 2003 with the McHenry Medical group as a general surgeon. My wife, Dr. Tammy Wu was with Sutter Gould. In 2006 I obtained acupuncture training, and became very interested in medical modalities involving needles. It was that same year where I decided to join my wife, Dr. Tammy Wu, Modesto Plastic Surgeon in creating Surgical Artistry. BACKGROUND:

I was born in New York City, and went to school in the suburbs. I graduated top of my class in high school. This led to my acceptances to all the universities I've applied to which included Harvard, Stanford, and Brown Universities. I chose Ivy League Brown University, and there, I met my wife, Dr. Tammy Wu - Plastic Surgeon. We were both students at the time. We continued together onto medical school at Brown University, and Dr. Tammy Wu graduated top of her Ivy League medical school class. Turning down a job offer in San Diego, I found a wonderful career in Trauma/General surgery in Modesto, California instead. Modesto has a scarcity of medical specialists and I felt like I was very needed, appreciated, and welcomed. This was a very fulfilling feeling for me as a medical provider. We decided to call Modesto and Central Valley California our home. We eventually established Surgical Artistry combining my work with Dr. Tammy Wu, Modesto Plastic Surgeon.

Lindsay, the RADIESSE rep brought the staff lunch from Panera. They didn’t have anything I could eat but that’s ok! I got my own lunch and my staff really enjoyed it. Lindsey also carries Xeomin which I don’t have available for my patients. But ai do have RADIESSE which I love. I love the biostimulatory results of this product. I like it for the lower face, neck and chest!!

Taking a picture in the Nicole’s mirror in my laser hair removal room. Just wanted to show off my shirt of my favorite Marathon which I will not be able to attend this year. It was part of the plan originally but hey, we roll with the punches we get thrown.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is one of the best windows we have into the human nervous system.
Despite what most people think, a healthy heart does not beat like a perfectly timed metronome. If your heart rate is 60 beats per minute, it doesn’t beat exactly once every second. Instead, there are tiny, millisecond fluctuations between beats (e.g., 0.95 seconds, then 1.05 seconds).
HRV is the measurement of that specific variation in time between each heartbeat.
The Tug-of-War: Why HRV Matters
Your HRV is controlled by your Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which has two competing branches.

• High HRV is generally a sign of a resilient, “recovered” body. It means your nervous system is balanced and can switch gears easily.
• Low HRV often indicates that your body is under stress, overtrained, or fighting off an illness. Your “Fight or Flight” system is dominating, making the heart beat more like a rigid machine.
What Influences Your HRV?
Your score isn’t just about how much you exercised today. It is a “bucket” that catches everything:
• Sleep Quality: This is the #1 driver of a high HRV.
• Alcohol: Even one drink can tank your HRV for 24 hours because it stresses the nervous system during sleep.
• Illness: Your HRV often drops 1–2 days before you even feel symptoms of a cold or flu.
• Hydration & Nutrition: Dehydration and heavy, late-night meals lower variability.
• Mental Stress: Work anxiety or emotional “burnout” shows up clearly in these numbers.
How to Use the Data
Because HRV is highly individual (a “good” score for a 20-year-old athlete might be 100ms, while a healthy 50-year-old might be 40ms), you shouldn’t compare yourself to others. Instead, watch your own baseline.

Today’s picture. I’m wearing a T shirt from my favorite marathon of all time: the Modesto Marathon: - but I am in no condition to run it due to my slow healing from my fast and my subsequent skin condition followed by my chronic lack of sleep and my current food sensitivity. I am going to try bread for the first time today…. And then try avocado again today. One new food item per day!

Here is our work photo for today. I’m with Vanessa and Shauna. The two of them have been with Surgical Artistry the longest. Both of them have been with me a long time. They are both on their 8th year here. Vanessa has been here longer by a month.

Everyone, have fun at the Modesto Marathon without me this year!

Many have asked me how Dr. Tammy Wu is doing. She has been back to running for a month and her diet is pretty much back to normal. She is in Los Angeles with her family at the moment, I couldn’t go with her as I wasn’t well enough to travel and I have extra sun sensitivity at the moment. But I am happy to be able to spend more time at work! And I’m super grateful that I have skin again! I was wondering if my alligator skin was going to heal. A few days ago it took at dramatic turn for the better. I watched it change during the course of a few hours during the day right in front of my eyes. Fascinating. I hope the rest of my rashes and my new ones disappear just as fast. I’m not really wanting any of this to be a new normal for me. Thanks everyone for allowing me to be gone from work for about a month. I continue to heal. See everyone back at work tomorrow.

The last one: the owl, is my favorite.

These are the first 4 of the 8 brocades of qi gong. I’ve only learned up to this far. It is part of Chinese medicine and Buddhism. I was told by Buddhist monks that I should learn the 8 moves of qi gong known as the 8 brocades. It’s meditation and medication in motion. Move number 3: separating heaven and earth is specifically to open up the gallbladder meridian and help that shoulder rash that developed for me yesterday.

My understanding of Chinese medicine has gone from just textbook to personal experiences and even direct visualization of meridians. Wow. It’s mind blowing actually. The initial stages of my skin illness drew out the Yin meridians. And now as I heal up, the Yang meridians are getting a turn at flaring and those patterns are showing up. Interesting how they took turns. I still have much to learn. I will try to make the best of this experience as I’ve always try to become a better doctor. I’ve not taken my Chinese medicine background seriously enough compared to my Surgical background. I think the universe is giving me a strong strong message….

GB 21 is a Shao Yang Pivot. It’s like a chimney. If the heat is rising from the Liver/Gallbladder, it follows the channel to the highest point before it vents out to save the internal organs from scorching. I am experiencing Qi stagnation transforming into Heat, which is now venting to the exterior. So what does one do? Try chrysanthemum and Mung beans to clear the heat that has already vented (the rash) and peppermint to move the stagnation. Time to open that bag of peppermint leaves I got from Amazon.

My first food choice of the day. I’m going to try these. Haven’t had them yet.
