Managing Screen Time Tip: When you’re in the car, swap portable screens for guessing games One easy guessing game is Car Color. Ask kids to pick a color, then guess how many cars in that color they can spot in 5 minutes. How close did they get to that number? Try the Alphabet Game, find items on the road starting with each letter A – Z. Also try 20 Questions, one person thinks of something, others ask up to 20 yes/no questions to guess it. The correct guesser starts the next round. The guessing game “switch” requires no preparation, no parts, or cost.

Managing Screen Time Tip: Cooking together is a great “trade up" from screen time, there are plenty of print cookbooks for children available from the library or for purchase. For nutritious and fun dishes for children ages 1 – 9 to create you might want to check out “cookbooks for kids” on the PBS.org website, https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/cookbooks-for-kids.

Managing Screen Time Tip: Rather than an iPad to keep kids occupied when you’re out and about, have a “play bag” handy. Ask them to pack their special play bag with a favorite stuffed animal, toys and games. When you’re in a rush, just grab the play bag as you’re running out the door. 📵🙂

Managing Screen Time Tip: Trade electronic media for printed books. Here’s some ways to encourage book reading from the children’s librarian at the New York city library - 1. Read to your children every day, even if they know how to read. 2. Keep books beside your child's bed. 3. Provide lots of book options. 4. Bring your child to the library to choose books for themselves. 5. Let your child see you reading.
Reading from a physical book is generally considered better than screen reading for deep comprehension, focus, and memory. 📖

Managing Screen Time Tip: To stop screen time first thing in the morning try this screen swap from Parent Club, “when kids go to bed, set up a little scene with some of their toys for them to wake up to. You can write a little message to them from the toys. Try giving them missions from time to time, like drawing a picture of their toys, or making the best spaceship they can out of Legos.”
