Viva "Sami" Long

Viva Long, also known as “Sami”, a woman whose life radiated resilience, cheerfulness, and an enduring sense of calm, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at Charter Senior Living of Moline in Moline, Illinois. Born on October 11, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri, Viva’s journey was marked by an unwavering devotion to her family, community, and faith.

Sami’s career was distinguished by dedication and leadership. She served as the deli manager first at Turnstyle and then at Cub Foods, where her warmth and diligence touched the lives of many. Her commitment extended beyond her professional endeavors into her spiritual life as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she embraced a vital role as a homemaking leader. Her influence was felt keenly not only within her family but also among the children she lovingly taught in Sunday School, always sharing her infectious joy and kindness.

An artist at heart, Viva expressed herself through various creative outlets. She was a talented seamstress, known for crafting with care and skill. Cooking was another of her passions, an art through which she brought comfort and happiness to those around her. Her love of music was evident in her joy of playing the piano, and her gentle spirit extended to all creatures, reflecting her affection for animals. These hobbies were not just pastimes but expressions of her generous and nurturing soul.

Sami’s personal life was a testament to unconditional love. She cherished her husband, Albert “Bud” Long, to whom she was devoted until the very end. Their marriage, begun on October 2, 1966, was a foundation of steadfast partnership and deep affection. Together, they raised daughters Debbie DuBe’ and Jill (Sam) Stawicki, as well as Vernon Lawton and Steve Long. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom adored her tender care and warm presence.

Her family roots trace back to her loving parents, Ernest and Iris (Whipple) Davis, who preceded her in death, as well as her beloved son, Mike Long. Though separated by loss, the memories and love they shared remain forever woven into the fabric of her life.

Sami’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her. She was delightful in every way, whether with family, the children who learned from her, or strangers touched by her kindness. The steadfast spirit she carried, full of joy and grace, stands as a beacon of comfort and inspiration.

Services to honor Sami Long’s remarkable life will take place at Wendt Funeral Home, 1811 15th Street Place, Moline, Illinois 61265. Kermit Wells

Kermit Wells, a dedicated music educator and cherished community figure, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. Born on June 27, 1936, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, Kermit devoted his life to the transformative power of education and the arts.

After earning his bachelor's degree in music education in 1958, followed by a master's degree in music education in 1966 from the University of Illinois, where he majored initially in Instrumental Music before turning to vocal music, Kermit began a remarkable career that would span decades and touch countless lives. In 1958, he moved with his parents to Moline, Illinois, embarking on a path that would define his legacy.

Kermit's professional journey began as a music teacher at local junior high and high schools, where his passion for education was evident. He became an accompanist for Dr. Swanson's Boys Choir, advancing to associate director in 1963. Upon Dr. Swanson’s retirement, Kermit assumed leadership of the Boys Choir in 1973 while also serving as Coordinator of Music for Moline High School. His tenure as director lasted an extraordinary 54 years, during which he traveled the world with the famed choir and introduced many boys to the joys and discipline of music. His efforts were formally recognized by the Boys Choir board after 35 years of devoted service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Kermit’s life was marked by his quirky and witty personality, underscored by a generous spirit. He was well known for his significant charitable contributions, particularly to his church and veterans’ organizations, reflecting his deep commitment to service. A Captain in the United States Army, Kermit’s sense of duty extended to all facets of his life.

His passions also included attending productions at Circa 21 and the Music Guild, cheering at Moline basketball and football games, and engaging in crossword puzzles. He possessed a particular fondness for West Highland White “Westie” Terriers, never without one by his side. In his youth, fitness was a primary hobby, and he was active in fitness clubs that mirrored his lifelong dedication to health and well-being.

Kermit often spoke with pride about his greatest accomplishment: being the director of the Moline Boys Choir. He cherished the role not merely as a position but as a vital ministry that broke cultural stereotypes, encouraging boys to embrace singing in a world that too often labeled it otherwise. He found fulfillment in mentoring students whose lives he enriched through music and education, many of whom still recall his influence with gratitude.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Gordon and Thelma (Simmons) Wells, and his sisters, Carol Anderson and Beverly Wells. Those who survive him include his dear friends Gil (Lesley) Shafir, who were like family to him and with whom he resided; nieces Kelly (Tim) Yager and Kim (Bill) Farb; nephew Scott (Susan) Anderson; and brother-in-law Alan Anderson; longtime friend Karen Collins.

A funeral service to honor Kermit Wells will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church, located at 2201 7th Avenue, Moline, Illinois, with a luncheon to follow. The funeral service will be livestreamed and can be viewed from the church's website and page. To view the livestream, please click on this link: FCC Live – First Congregational, Moline, IL

Memorials can be made to the Quad City Music Guild or the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan, Illinois.

Kermit Wells leaves behind a legacy of education, music, and kindness that has profoundly impacted the community. His life serves as a testament to the enduring power of dedication, generosity, and the arts to shape lives. He will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all who knew him.

Our Story

The Wendt family has been in the funeral business for six generations. They began in 1866 with J. Robert Earler, who came to Illinois from Germany around 1853. As an established cabinetmaker, he was called upon to provide wooden caskets for area farmers. When a person passed away in those days, the funeral was usually conducted in the home of the deceased, and the burial was in a plot on the family farm. Shortly after the Civil War, Mr. Earler opened a funeral parlor in Port Byron, IL, and Earler's son-in-law, August H. Wendt, took over the business from 1881 to 1920. At that time, Earl and Robert, the sons of August Wendt, ran the business until 1945. The current location of Wendt Funeral Home, a large Queen Anne Victorian house built in Moline in 1902, was purchased by Earl and Robert Wendt in 1929. Earl Wendt II handled the business with his brother, Richard, from 1945 until Earl's death in 1967. Then Earl III, along with his uncle, ran the home until Richard's retirement in 1985. Earl 'Buck' Wendt III now owns the funeral home, and operates it with his son, Earl Wendt IV, who joined him in 1977 and became a licensed director in 1983. Through the many generations, the Wendt family has always and will continue to provide the highest level of compassion, integrity and service to our families within our communities.
