Barbara Oaks
Barbara Oaks, a woman whose radiant spirit and boundless love left an indelible mark on all who knew her, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026. Born on Christmas Day in 1932, Barbara’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and the music that filled her days.
Barbara dedicated much of her working life to Buesings Automotive, where she worked diligently until her retirement. Beyond her career, she took immense pride in personal milestones such as returning to receive her diploma—a moment she fondly recounted as an "old woman standing with a bunch of kids and meeting the mayor." This accomplishment stood as a testament to her perseverance and zest for life.
More than anything, Barbara will be remembered for the pure love she generously gave to everyone around her. She was a beautiful person in every sense—loving, caring, bright, and funny—with a smile that could brighten the darkest room. Her warmth and kindness were a constant source of comfort and joy to her family and friends.
Music was a treasured part of Barbara’s life. Weekends were often spent with her favorite records playing in the background as she cleaned, her heart dancing to melodies that brought her peace and happiness. Another passion close to her heart was Hawaii, a place she deeply cherished and often reminisced about with fondness.
Barbara’s family, who survive her and carry forward her legacy of love, include her devoted daughter Kristi Oaks; her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Phil Garcia; along with grandchildren Jennifer Sue, Lance Horlas, Kasey Berkenbile, and Kyle Sountris. She was also blessed with sixteen great-grandchildren—Jadelynn, Tony, Lance, Chris, Cierra, Kaitlyn, Max, Abby, Jalissa, Lilly, Bentley, Corbin, Kaley, Wade, Ellie, and Ava—and four great-great-grandchildren: Rose, Lillian, Easton, and Natalia. Her sister-in-law, Rose Smith, also remains a cherished family member.
Barbara’s journey on earth was enriched by those who preceded her in passing, including her beloved parents Kenneth and Esther Smith; her husband, Wade Oaks; her sister Marilyn Patsch; her brother and sister-in-law Robert and Anita Smith; her big brother Richard Smith; her sons Kim Oaks and Kasey Oaks; and dear grandchildren Christopher Oaks, Chad Samberg, Danielle Berkenbile, and Jessica Daniels. She also opened her heart to many beloved four-legged family members—Sam, Bullet, Spook, Ming, Tuko, Mitzi, Vasser, Peanut, Maxi, and Buddy—who brought her companionship and joy.
As we remember Barbara Oaks, we honor a life lived with grace and generosity—a life that was illuminated by love, laughter, and the joyful notes of her favorite songs. Her beautiful smile and tender heart will forever remain etched in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know her. In celebrating her life, we find comfort and inspiration in the pure love she shared so freely, a legacy of kindness that will endure for generations to come.
There will be a celebration of life at the American Legion in Milan, Illinois. Date to be determined. You can call Grandma's house for any information.
