DEPRESSION – Don’t Blame It Totally On COVID!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 280 million people worldwide have depression. It is the #1 disability in the world.

Depression can affect children, teens, young people, adults, senior citizens, males, females, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, churchgoers, non-believers, Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, agnostics, atheists…

According to Dr. Gregory Jantz, founder of The Center A Place of HOPE, the following are factors that can lead to Depression:

1. Emotions 4. Nutrition
2. Unforgiveness 5. Physical
3. Technology 6. Sleep Habits

Let’s look at ways to overcome and heal from the Emotion & Unforgiveness factors that can lead to Depression.

 Schedule an appointment and talk to your primary doctor.
 Avoid isolating yourself. Try to involve yourself in group activities.
 Emotions are God-given. Learn how to control your emotions.
 Seek individual therapy with a professional and licensed therapist to help you acknowledge and overcome unresolved hurt and anger.
 Secrets are emotionally toxic. With the help of a professional licensed therapist, discuss any past trauma you have experienced.
 Release offenses and grudges. Learn how to forgive others as well as yourself.
 Let go of faulty thinking and surround yourself with positive affirmations. I am loveable. I am enough. I deserve respect.
 Create boundaries to maintain your peace of mind. Choose to be happy. Choose not to react to negative comments or actions. However, when necessary, respond appropriately.
 Journal – Walk – Exercise – Pray – Meditate
 If needed, take antidepressants prescribed by your doctor. (It’s really OK! Taking an antidepressant prescribed by your doctor is the same as taking medicine for high blood pressure, diabetes, or any other medical condition.

QUESTION

How do you think “Emotions” and “Unforgiveness” can lead to depression?

If you feel that you are suicidal or may harm yourself or others, please call 988 immediately! There is HOPE!

It's been a minute since my last post, but much has been accomplished. I've completed 12 of 16 classes in my Marriage, Family, and Couples Graduate Master's program at Geneva College. Obtaining both spiritual and professional knowledge of mental health is invaluable! Professional goal: PA Licensing.

As we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, many people look forward to spending happy times with family and friends. Yet, holidays aren't always "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy"! For some, feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, and sadness often escalate. You are not alone! It's Ok not to be Ok. But, I encourage you to reach out to your doctor who can refer you to a therapist/counselor. Do something kind for someone else; it will make you feel better! YOU are valuable, and life is worth living!!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.)

Have you ever noticed how different you feel on a warm and sunny day as compared to a dark and gloomy day? S.A.D., (an appropriate acronym), is a form of depression usually associated with the winter season. It is the result of continued lack of sunlight and vitamin D. Some people refer to it as the winter blues.

Just as long, warm, and sunny days can improve moods, long, cold, and gloomy days can negatively impact moods.

Symptoms of S.A.D. can include:

Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability which occurs daily for much of the day for a period of two consecutive weeks or more.

Fatigue and restlessness which disrupts concentration.

Changes in appetite causing weight loss or gain.

Disruptive sleep: Inability to fall asleep, inability to stay asleep, or sleeping too much.

Thoughts of harming oneself and/or thoughts of su***de.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, see a medical professional!

Medical Treatment for S.A.D. can include:

Vitamin D supplements.

Light Therapy Lamps or Boxes

Medication

Referral to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Self-Help Treatments for S.A.D. can include:

Exercise regularly.

Take a brisk walk outside and breathe in fresh air or walk inside. Just get moving!

Open curtains and/or blinds of your residence. Let the sunlight in!

Do not isolate yourself! Get out and interact with others; socialize!

Avoid too many carbs like pasta, breads, and pies, and eat plenty of protein-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Carbs spike glucose levels which will then drop suddenly.

If you feel that you are suicidal or may harm someone, please contact 800-273-8255 immediately.

Peace & Blessings!
