A look back at a special part of our history…

Before ambulances looked the way they do today, funeral homes played a major role in emergency response — including right here at Gethers Funeral Home.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, more than half of all ambulances in America were actually hearses or station wagons. Funeral directors were on call 24 hours a day, answering emergency calls and transporting the sick and injured to the hospital.

Our own “Gethers Funeral Home Ambulance Service” was part of that history, serving Moncks Corner and surrounding communities long before modern EMS standards were created.

Once new federal regulations changed ambulance design and emergency care requirements, funeral homes across the country — including ours — stepped out of the ambulance business.

Still, this piece of history is a reminder of how deeply funeral professionals have always been committed to serving their communities, both then and now.

Another example of the deep-rooted legacy of care that Gethers Funeral Home continues to uphold.
