Update. We have water again!
After I found the leak, I dug down to it because I didn't feel like pulling dirt from the bottom of the hole if I didn't have to.
Notice the bow in the pipe? Seems the dirt settled on top and pushed the joint on the bottom to the breaking point.
The crack on the bottom of the T connector tells the story.
My neighbor and I put everything back together. Then, at his suggestion I built a cradle out of rocks, put expanding foam around the pipe, and very carefully covered it up again with clay the next day, after making triple sure there were no leaks.
Just as I finished that, he came with his tractor and pushed the other pile of dirt on top to finish the whole saga. Yay!
