Ann Hirschman, 76, has been actively saving the lives of wounded political demonstrators since the 1960s. The self-proclaimed “Grandmother of Street Medics” has served on the frontlines of the civil rights movement, putting her own life on the line amid the chaos of the 1973 Wounded Knee Operation, a 1969 political demonstration in Greenwich Village, and a range of other major, national protests. In someone who isn’t breathing, those minutes are critical. Providing rescue breathing or CPR can help to save a life, and is the most important first step in treating an opioid overdose. Each year, PDRC staff renew their CPR certifications to ensure they are ready for any situation.
