O'Donnell-Thurman Life Celebration Home

O'Donnell-Thurman Life Celebration Home We are focused on placing you on a healing path. We will thoughtfully listen to you, encouraging you to share and talk about your loved one.

Throughout our time with you and your family, we will be a guiding hand helping you make the right choices. The James O’Donnell Funeral Home has been serving Monroe City and the surrounding communities for over 100 years, dating back to 1895 from its Hannibal location. In 2018 the James O’Donnell Funeral Home opened the James O’Donnell Life Celebration Home of Monroe City when it acquired the former Yager-Kendrick Funeral Home. New renovations and furnishings have increased the comforts of this modern facility for the families of Monroe City. Jimmy O’Donnell and his fellow directors are the only Life Celebration Home in the area. This means that our funeral directors are specially trained to co-create with families a memorable, healing experience that truly remembers a life lived. Together with the families we serve we create a unique experience that celebrates the path of our loved one’s life and shares all that is special.

Yesterday, a Life Celebration was held in honor of Andrea L. Quinn. Andrea was a graduate of the University of Iowa, earning her master’s in business and building a successful career serving as Owner and later CFO of HiRail, Inc. She met the love of her life, Dan, in 1982, and their marriage was filled with laughter, travel, and shared adventures. Andrea loved cooking and grilling with Dan, reading mysteries and thrillers, watching Jeopardy!, and cheering on the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. Above all, she loved deeply and will be remembered for her devotion, intelligence, and grace.

Compassion, Love and Kindness!

Saturday, we celebrated Julie Anne Spalding at her Life Celebration. Julie lived a life defined by kindness, positivity, and a gentle spirit, always greeting others with a smile. She spent the last nine years at Monroe City Manor, where she was deeply loved by the nursing staff. Julie loved children; she was a foster mom and a paraprofessional, where her compassion touched many lives. She found happiness in simple joys like her favorite TV shows, sweet snacks, and decorating lamb cakes. She enjoyed listening to Alabama and the Oak Ridge Boys. Julie was a devoted mother and a truly good-hearted person whose love and kindness will be remembered always.

James O’Donnell Life Celebration Home

The O’Donnell family has had the honor of serving the area since 1895. With the recent addition of the James O’Donnell Life Celebration Home, they are able to assist area families who have experienced a loss with a facility in Monroe City.

During the COVID 19 Crisis: For the family…call us. We know what to do. We will take care of your loved one and will meet with you via telephone, email and in person as the need arises. We will help you plan services. You can have a visitation and a funeral. Any public notices will say that funeral services are private. You will have the ability to invite people to be present with you; however, at no time can more than twenty-five people gather at one time. We will plan no more than one service per day in our facility to ensure that exposure to others is minimized. As new information becomes available protocols may change.

For everybody else…telephone your family member or friend who has suffered a loss so that they know that they are not alone. Offer words of love and support and a virtual hug…drop something delicious by the house and have a very brief visit…leave a condolence on the funeral home website…make a donation to the suggested charity…send a card or flowers or have a Mass said…remain in touch…and above all else…say prayers for the deceased and their family. These gifts of sympathy and charity are beyond measure and will give the family the courage they need to face a new day.

I have seen countless times when the good people of Monroe City and the surrounding communities have rallied together and lifted broken hearts and held them close and helped to heal them. No doubt, that will continue.
